I've got a 2002 SXT Dakota, 3.9. 5 speed. What I
can tell you is this, I've read stories about
Bosch sensors not working well in Dakota's, but
what I also learned the hard way was this. There
are quite a few choices when it comes to O2
sensors, but you've got to make sure you put the
right ones in or the truck will not run properly.
You've got to specify which emissions system the
truck came with, and if it's an automatic or
standard, yes that makes a huge difference. My
truck has four sensors, two pre and two post
converter. They are all different numbers so make
sure you put the right one in the right spot or it
will not run. Mine has California emissions, you
can tell if there's a CARB sticker under the hood.

I had a catastrophic meltdown of my Cat and had to
replace it. I installed a Magnaflow California
Cat, a set of Gibson Headers, and a Gibson 3 Inch
Side swept exhaust. I also replaced the O2 sensors
since the downstream one melted with the Cat. The
first set I installed were Denso, the truck ran
but kept throwing codes etc. So I ended up
replacing them with Delphi sensors which I believe
were OEM. After that the truck ran perfectly, no
more codes.

I also changed out the injectors, a new TPS, and
finished with a Superchips Cortex 91 octane tune.
The truck runs very well, loads of power.
I too had the hesitation surge thing happening.
From what I can deduce it was the TPS. IN my case
I was getting a very lean mix then wham the truck
would take off.

As far as the Cat Meltdown goes, I caused that
myself. I did a complete tune up, plugs wires
rotor cap and cam sensor. And like an idiot I was
off by one, for each of the spark plug wires. It's
amazing, but the darn thing ran...the PCM adjusted
the mix timing etc so I had a super rich thing
going on, lit up the drivers side converter before
I realized what was happening.

I am having the same misfire on cylinder 3 problem on my 99
Dakota 6cyl. I thought it was an overdrive problem because
pushing the overdrive off button made the problem go away.
When I hit 62 mph it starts bucking like it's going in and out of
overdrive. The mechanic has had it for a while now. He's
swapped the injector. Swapped the plug and wire. Changed
the computer. Did a compression test. He still can't figure out
what's causing the problem. The tranny was checked and is
fine. Although I didn't really feel it was a tranny issue. He said
when on a graphing diagnostic computer cylinder 3 peaks then
only goes about half way back to normal. He's changing the
distributor next and after that said he's at a loss and it'll have
to go to the dealer. If the distributed doesn't solve the problem,
is there anything else he could check before it goes to the
dealer?

Hook up a vacuum gauge, that will tell if the intake is leaking.
