 Hello all,

I've just begun to modify my 1996 Dakota Sport
3.9L V6. I've replaced the stock air can with an
open edelbrock one and a k&n filter. My fastman
throttle body is on the way and I also have a
Flowmaster super 40 (yet to be installed).

I live in Columbus, OH, and I was wondering if
anyone had any recommendations on places that do
exhaust work. For now, I was just going to drop by
my local Tuffy's and have them install the
 muffler.

Also, is it ok to just do a muffler replacement,
or should I have new pipes, tips, etc. installed?

Besides the exhaust questions, I was wondering if
anyone could offer insight as to where to go next
with performance mods. I don't think I will do any
sensor relocate mods just because they don't seem
to be hugely beneficial and I feel that the
sensors are in their original positions for good
 reason.

Also, I'm hesitant to do anything related to
ignition (spark plugs, coil, wires, etc.) right
now because I have yet to fix my intake manifold
leak. Once I fix the intake manifold in the
spring, then I'll start modding ignition related
 parts.

The budget is around $700 right now. Any
 suggestions would be great. Thanks!

 Haha I wish man...

Don't have the money or resources for that, I have
to stick with mods for now. Maybe on my next dakota
 down the line!

So, if your new air cleaner draws only underhood air, you just reduced power and gas mileage. You want to draw in cold air for more power.

If you have an intake manifold leak, no point in doing anything until you fix that. It's like putting in a big block V-8 and driving with the brakes locked.

Muffler alone won't gain a lot of power. You want 3" exhaust all the way back. And if you can get the '92-'93 heads and exhaust manifolds, they flow more freely.

Thanks a lot for the info! I'll get on the cold
air intake, I was suspicious about installing an
open air intake instead of a cold air intake. I
guess I've learned an important lesson.

 I don't think I'll do anything else until I've
fixed the intake manifold leak. My truck's at home
and I'm off at college now so I don't really have
access to it until I come home for spring break or
summer, but once I have time, I will definitely
look into doing those exhaust modifications.

Thank you so much for your insight.

After the intake manifold is done, a good tuneup is in order. Always start with everything up to snuff. That means new spark plugs, plug wires, ignition rotor, distributor cap (with brass inserts, not aluminum, to prevent oxidation), air filter, inspect all vacuum hoses, inspect and clean all engine and battery grounds, battery clamps, wires and terminals. A lot of people overlook this.

Oh definitely, my grandpa will be helping me out
with the intake manifold repairs and he's already
reminded me on multiple occasions that I will need
to replace spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc.
The air filter was replaced recently and so were all
hoses. Once again, I thank you very much for your
 advice.

Steven, I think the 3" exhaust may be a little to big on a stock V6. the 2.5" stock size should be plenty. Just install that Flowmaster you have. I think the most bang for your buck would be a set of Harland Sharpe 1.7:1 roller rockers. Easier to install than a hotter cam with most of the same benefits. After that maybe either a programmer or a set of lower(higher numerically) gears for the rear. If you have an auto trans I'd recommend 4.11:1 or if you have a manual 5spd 3.92:1.

Yes, I definitely have my eye on those Harland Sharp
 roller rockers :D

I have the manual 5 speed, so I'll go with the
 3.92:1 gears.

Thanks for the advice guys. This place is great!
