Hey Pete, just talked to a friend and he said it might be the oil pump drive shaft or he said some people call it an intermediate shaft. Gonna give it a try

I heard a possibly cam sensor, crankshaft sensor, distributor issues, timing chain, fuel pump etc. By all this I could have a new truck. I must clarify this more of a hesitation than a backfire unless I stay on the gas then it will backfire but if I shut it off and restart it no problem all this when its warm. There is to much it could be this or that and nobody has had this specific problem before... hmm.... I am not a parts replace and see if it works I don't have that kind of money to play around with.

Hey Pete; did you ever solve your back-fire problem? Last post I see was dated July 2010. If you did would like to know what it was.

I have a 92 V6 3.9 Dakota that is doing something similar. Starts OK but will not accelerate and if you stay on the gas it will back-fire. Turn the engine off and restart and all is well. Now is doesn't do this every time but about 2 out of 5 starts will produce the same results. I've replaced plug wires and rotor and distributor cap so that isn't the cause. Could sure use some ideas on this one!

RTRS, yes silly as it sounds had to replace all 4 - O2's back
to OEM's the Boschs were doing something hard to explain
other than they would start fine when cold go into close loop
like they should, then after drive warm engine shutoff restart
would be fine for about minute or so than out no where would
back fire hesitate and then clear up if I shut it down restart be
fine. The only thing my scan tool would show the fuel trims
would go way over on the positive side than back to normal
which led to think I had a leaky injector(s) and other things
which came mind. Talk to mechanic at dealership explained
situation he was baffled as me never experience a vechile fo
this he just told me these 02's have s small window
parameter and aftermarkets have a s bigger parameter and
our trucks being OBD2 compliance they have tighter
parameters and make you buy OEM's . Enough my string on
babble good luck let me know your outcome.

Have now replaced the fuel filter and waiting to see if that clears up my problem. So far so good. I'm not real clear on what OBD2 and OEM means in your reply. You have 4 2002's? Mine is a 92 model.

Thanks.

OBD2- On Board Diagnostic second generation
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacture(s)

Your 92' only has one O2
And your system is OBD1
On Board Diagnostic first generation

OBD Is your Part of your computer(PCM or SBEC or Single
Board Engine Controller. Powertrain Control Module
There are multiple names for your computer

Your truck like others have 1 oxygen sensor (O2) years from
87-95 then from 96-present either you will have 2 or 4. And
referring to OBD 1 & 2
87-96 is OBD 1
96 to ? OBD 2
? OBD 3

Your O2 sensor is on the right side of the cat converter.
Oxygen sensors can cause a host of problems but cannot
necessary your problem. Just a thought be sure all your
ignition parts such as cam sensor, ignition wires, distributor
cap , rotor , ignition coil, crank sensor. If all is good go to
mechanicals compression check.. Endless testing to
determine your problem
