Subject: Best way to "bolt on" 25 more HP? IP: Logged
Message: Hello everyone. I have recently bougt a 99 Dakota with a 5.2 V8. I'm happy with my purchase but would like a little bit better acceleration. The truck is stock and I was wondering what are the best mods to start with? Intake and exhaust? I'm not looking to make major increases, just a few things that will help out.

That should be good for about 50HP.
Fart can muffler will get you 20 more.
Don't underestimate the power of a wing.

Message: Ummm JB this is a Dodge Dakota, not a Honda Dakota. I was thinking about a K & N and maybe deleting the cat, then maybe a Flowmaster muffler. Would that get me close to 25 more ponies?

I doubt it. Cat = no gain, Muffler= maybe 1 or 2
K&N= maybe 1 or 2

Message: I put on a Jet chip, Gibson performance headers, K&N CAI, a Flowmaster Super 40 muffler, and removed the resonators (solely for sound purposes) on my '06 4.7L. I have noticed a significant gain in power. On Saturday, I am getting dual exhaust put on to help more. I'm hoping for true dual, but we'll see what the mechanics can work with. I doubt it will be actual dual exhaust, probably not enough room to work with underneath.

How about PCM programming? There is no way removing a cat, adding a K & N and a Flowmaster will add 25HP. Point made.

Do it right, look for a dyno near you, and dyno before and after mods. Then you can objectively talk #'s.

20 to 25hp on the 5.2 engine
You will spend more time & money screwing with
cats, mufflers, chips , etc etc etc
and still come up short....

If you read the "55 more Hp thread" posted by "the Joe.C" then you'll have some of the same idiot answers on this thread. The fact is you can always boost up your power by increasing the CFM into your engine. Also tubular headers, any type of Hi flow exhaust and chip that puts more fuel to your engine when you need it always seems to work for me. So never mind the @ss holes here that are basically saying you have no hope in those gains.
Remember, we talking increase HP from the crank and more to the wheels.

My best bet for hp's from the LA engines:
1.7 roller rockers
Free flowing exhaust
free flowing intake
Beyond that Cam

We are talking about a Magnum not a LA series small blocks. I highly suggest you dont put 1.7 RRs on a LA engine. 1.6 is the limit without special heads/valves. Mags have no problem with 1.7's and do wake em up pretty good though.
Check with www.hughesengines.com for the PCM or tuner.

Message: Skootr,
Sorry I meant Magnum LA. They are still the LA engine just with a Magnum head set. I didn't say Magnum because that also applies to the 4.7.
Thanks for correcting me.
