2001 4.7 2wd..Lately Ive been having issues with my truck overheating during city driving conditions, definitely happens when I run the AC.. I can get it to cool back down by running it at high RPM"S so I am thinking the thermostat might be sticking, normally I would just change it out but I changed it about 50,000 miles ago.. How often do these go bad? Any other things I should check first?

Is your electric cooling fan coming on when it is supposed to? It should come on with demand for A/C and engine temp above 130degF. Also, when engine temp gets to 210 degF.

It should be mounted to the back of the radiator inside of the fan shroud. Chances are if you've never noticed it, it's not coming on. I know I can hear mine when it kicks on if Im standing outside of the truck.

I can hear mine kick on from inside the truck, but i did have the fuse blow on my 98, but i added my electric fan it wasnt stock. On freeway speeds typically you wont need the fan to stay cool so when you say it cools at high rpms is it also higher speeds?

It stays cool as long as Im not stop and go. As far as hearing the fan I dont at all.. I looked to day while the engine was running and it appeared to be running.. Will it stay on after the engine is turned off?

NO, as I posted earlier:

"It should come on with demand for A/C and engine temp above 130degF. Also, when engine temp gets to 210 degF."

little more detail.. I was sitting in the drive thru yesterday and it started overheating.. I thought maybe if I turned the heater on it might cool it a bit.. Wrong.. it continued getting hotter and the air out of the heater was OAT.. When I began driving again the heater blew hot and the engine cooled down.. Thoughts?

go and buy another thermostat. What are they, like $20? That's cheaper and faster than almost any other repair would be. You may even be able to get one for free if it's still under warranty. I know, "only 55,000 miles." It is possible that you got a defective one, though.

Maybe drop to a cooler T-stat 180-160 and look for a failsafe. When it goes bad it locks in the open position.

If the only problem is the thermostat, you'd be better off replacing it with the correct one for your 4.7. Going as low as 160 should trip the MIL for the engine not coming properly up to temperature, and even 180 could cause problems. Your engine was designed with a 195 thermostat. If a good 195 thermostat doesn't fix the problem, it would be better to find the real problem - rather than try to mask it until it gets worse.

this is just my two cents but if that is your truck in the picture. when was the last time you blew out between the fins on the radiator? I ust to run heavy equipment and that was usually the first thing the operator wouldnt check. its sometimes the simple things that we overlook.

Excellent point. The reason I started the advice I offered about the thermostat with "if" is that I doubt very much this is a thermostat issue. A bad thermostat should cause issues at speed, as well as the stop and go overheating problem being related here.

That picture was taken about two years ago.. This has just recently started when I moved out to the islands.. If its not the thermostat wat could the issue be? It doesnt happen all the time either.. Could the thermostat be sticking? Whats the best way to clean the fins? I spray it down after everytime I go wheeling but it has been at least six months since that has happened.. Thoughts?

Very unlikely to be the thermostat sticking - by now it probably would have stuck in situations other than city driving. If you don't see the problem on the highway, don't expect it to be the thermostat. Any time you can get a motor to cool back down by running higher rpms, the thermostat should probably be the last thing to think of. Could be poor cooling due to internal or external crud at the radiator. Could be a problem with the electric fan - have you checked to see if it is running when you are overheating ? Are you losing coolant ? Other things to check would be a very small leak the makes the coolant level to go down over time, or the pressurized radiator cap.

Have you been putting leak stop in the radiator?
I had a pin hole leak in my radiator and I kept feeding it a leak stop sort of product for about 2-3 years. It overheated all the time until I broke down and spent the money for a new rad and electric fan to replace the stock clutch fan. Now it cools a little TOO well.
