Hello all, I just recently got a 2001 Dakota SLT QC 4.7, auto. The motor has 77,000 miles. I would like to improve the performance and mileage with exhaust (im thinking magnaflow), Superchips flashpaq, and airraid jr intake (I don't want to go with the open element as I spend A LOT of time on dirt roads in the sticks)

My question is it really worth the money. I drive a lot (30-35,000 miles a year), mostly highway with a lot of 3% to 7% grade in the rockies (5,000 - 9,000 feet). What kind of real world mileage improvements and power improvements would I expect. I rarely tow with the truck. Thanks for your help

depending what gears you have a few people on here have stated they saw a mileage improvement going from 3.55:1 to 4.10:1 gears. you can search this site from here:

I'd expect a performance gain with superchips, but not a milage gain. I wouldn't expect a performance or milage gain from the other mods you are considering. I went from 15 to almost 16 mpg going from 3.55 to 4.10 like daddio mentioned -but there would be a very long payback period if you were doing that for the milage. For me, it was well worth it for the performance. Cams would wake up your truck more than the other mods you were considering. Daddio's given you a great free way to search the site for what has been posted about the better mods for a 4.7.

I have a flush-mount tonneau cover which gave me a consistent 1MPG gain. It's not much, but every little bit helps.

What's your left foot doing?

Interesting. I was always under the impression that a lower gear kept you in a higher RPM band and hurt mileage, not help it.

dusty,

Dusty Hill- ZZTop?

Anyway, that thing about mileage and gears ratios.........it's all about the space-time continuum.

On hills, and around town, it is possible to Increase your mpg with a shorter, or higher gear ratio. (more rpms at a given speed). You mentioned hills, your motor may be working at a more efficient area of the power curve with the shorter gear. (you know- space-time continuum)
:-)

I forgot to mention, I went from 355's to 392's with my truck, with a manual tranny. then went up 1 inch on the rear tires, so it's almost back where it was, but not quite. the S/C tuner makes the speedo correct though. -checked it with my sailboats GPS. The auto has a longer 1st gear. A manual with a 4.10 and 1st gear would be a real joke, unless you put some big tires on it.

Yea, it makes sense. The tires I have now are just 245/75's. I am surprised how high the top gear is on this truck. 2,200 RPMs at 75MPH. I've never had a truck run that low. My biggest gripe about this truck is the transmission. First of all, i'm not a fan of automatics anyway, but it was impossible to find a 5 speed QC with the 4.7. This truck replaced my 2001 Ranger that I totalled. This motor has substantially more power (than the 4.0), but the ford 5 speed auto (standards are impossible to find in Utah) was hands down smoother than the dakota is. Shifts were much more predictable and smoother. I am hoping that the Programmer would clean up the shifts a little bit.

Thanks for the info on the cams. I thought there were outrageously priced, but looking around a little further there are some great deals of there for under $300 bucks for a set of HO's. It seems that many of the custom grinds are not worth the money unless you are doing a little more serius mods to the truck such as heads and changing compression, am I right or mistaken?

Check them out!

Actually, for any OEM DC part!

NO, I don't work there or anything like that.

I believe any year will work, I think they are all the same specs.

Try the 02?

Granted, if you want even more gains from the cams, there are others, they're more expensive though I'm pretty sure.

From my understanding about cams is that I will have to do a lot of other work to get the maximum performance from the cams (ported heads, higher compression)which I don't want to do. I don't want to lose a lot of low end torque and this truck is a daily driver that will see almost 40,000 miles a year. It does me no good to have a truck that makes all its power above 4,000 RMSs.

Then go with the HO cams, rather than something hotter. Some extra power, without a loss of low end torque. That was important to me too, as I tow and plow with the truck. No extra work required, although a bit more spark advance also helps.

All I did was a set of KRC cams and a K&N filter. I went from 15 sec 1/4's to almost a 14 flat (if I strip every pound I can - no tailgate, no jack, no spare...). Gas milage is also up. The shift in power and torq curves also solved the axel hop problem I had when the engine was stock. I thought I was going to have to add slapper bars or maybe even ladder bars and want my truck to be a 'sleeper'. Glad I didn't have to make the obvious visible mods to the rear suspension.

03, 3.92 LSD rear, 5 sp manual, 4.7 w/KRC 212 cams.

No PCM flash, No bigger throttle body, No headers, Stock gears and No converter (5 sp manual)
