Hey anybody; I have a 2000 4x4 ext cab, 4.7 that came apart @ 124,000 mi. It took me forever to find a replacement used due to cost of new one. Found one w/ supposedly 80,000 mi on it in what seemed to be in good condition from inspecting it. As you all know you can only put an '00 engine in an '00 truck because of the reluctor wheel on crank having only 16 teeth instead of 32 like the '01 and up. Anyway I installed the engine and it seemed to run OK for a while then the MIL light came on and I scanned it and it said I had a problem w/ either my cam sensor or my crank sensor. I changed both because this was the less costly option. Still had same codes come up. Found out that there was a posted news letter on the 4.7's that the heads might have not been so "perfect" from the plant, so they were selling cam sensor shims that amounted to be 4 small washers of different thicknesses for like $20. Like an idiot I bought them an installed the one that made the clearance on the cam sensor within spec. Still light on and truck still running kind of off. Took truck to local dealership with great reluctance to be checked out. $90 just to hook it up to diagnostic before any work even being done. They tell me the same thing that I discovered for myself w/my scanner. I told them that I had already swapped out sensors and am at a standstill. I leave truck, next day they notify me that they replaced sensors and are still having problems - DUH! I asked what they did with other sensors, they said thaqt they thru them out. I got just a bit heated, those were $45 each and I'm not paying for new parts again that I just installed. They continued to work on diagnosis and by this time my truck is tied up for going on two weeks and I'm getting a bit impatient w/ these guys, I mean after all it's their product and they have all the expensive toys and gadgets to fix their product don't they? Finally I get a call from them telling me that they replaced the wiring harness under hood ($700) and that I was going to need a new computer ($1200)and that they still haven't solved the problem. I'm thinking, great that's all I need, more parts and no money for them. I get another call after they install new computer and still no improvement, then the tech discovers that the timing is off one tooth on both chains and it needs new chains and guides. I say OK but take all that other stuff you put on there and wanted to charge me for without even my consent and let me know how much that's going to be. $1900 for timing chains and guides. I get in my truck to test drive because tech is getting tired of working on truck. He leaves scanner hooked up while we drive. Truck still not right, he checks out trans with scanner and it seems to be Ok and he has another tech look at it and between them they decide it needs a CAT converter.($500) dealer price but they can get me an after market for possibly $275. I said no thanks just let me have my truck back. I got it home, removed cat and fired it up and MAN this thing runs like a scalded dog. After a short period of time before replacing the engine I started having trans problems due to the way the engine was running, I thought (what the heck) but due to computer control the trans started mal-functioning due to the erratic fluctuations in the throttle. Needless to say I had to put another trans in it (could only afford used $650)Now after all that the MIL light stays on due to no cat, but my problem is that the trans is acting stupid again. When started if you let it set too long idling before taking off it shifts from 1st to 3rd w/no 2nd or it feels like it is taking off in 3rd. You can shut of engine and start it back up and put in gear and it seems to operate fine until you come up to a stop and the truck's RPM'S drop and go back up making the truck want to lunge forward and with foot on brakes the engine dies. When engine and trans are warm it dosen't seem to do this as bad, but still the RPM'S go up and down and the engine don't die. Does anybody know if this is a sensor or torque converter problem possibly? I love my truck but this is driving me crazy. Can somebody shed some light on this for me please? THANK YOU!

you know that seems like what my truck has been doing for a while now, with the wanting to lurch fwd at a stoplight, then wanting to shift funny afterwards, mine also seems like its slipping if i let it sit and run for extended periods of time, but once around the block and the slipping feeling is gone... but my truck is a 1990 reg cab 4by that i swapped the original 3.9 for a '98 5.2 i built up a bit with computer and harness from a '91 and the orig A500 tranny for a newer 518 tranny.
After reading your post since the only things that our trucks really have in common other than them being dakotas is the torque converter... i just cooked my engine over the weekend so a 5.9 is going in and mostlikely a new torque, thanks
