Subject: lower gears
IP: Logged

Message:
i have a 2000 dakota(4.7L,45rfe,4x4,3.55 gears,31" tires) and am looking to get some lower gears for towing. I was thinking about swapping in a set of 4.ll's but am concerned about fuel milage decrease.Does anyone who has done a gear swap on their dakota have any info on milage or any changes for that matter. THanks for any help.

I have the same combination as you in RC and actually gained almost 1 mpg swapping to 4.10 gears. Many with the 4.7 have seen this slight increase with the swap. I went with an Auburn limited slip at the same time, launches nice when not towing.

Thanks for the replay Kowalski. I feel better that a slight increase in fuel economy is possible. What do you tow with your dakota? HOw much of a difference , for towing, did the gear swap make?

Pretty much anything I want. I've towed several different campers, up to about 6000 lbs. I've also got a 20' flatbed trailer rated for 7500; I'm sure I was over that with a full pallet of asphalt shingles recently, since it's a very heavy trailer. Pulls my 19' cuddy cabin like it's not even there. I wouldn't have tried the 7500 plus pull with the stock 3.55 gearing. I get 15 mpg in mixed driving with no effort at conservation, about 11 mpg towing a 5000 to 6000 lb fifth wheel camper. The gear swap made towing feel easier on the truck. I was getting 15 on the stock rubber, went up almost to 16 with the gear swap, then back to 15 with a switch to knobbier 31s.

c Bass if you didn't buy the gears yet, I might be able to help u out.
With my 5.9 it cost me a little highway mileage, but helped with local mileage. So I think I'm going back the 3.55's and sell the 4.10's.

For "Well" - by all means; I would be pleased if you wouldn't listen to me. Also if you would stop lying about me. Never turned a wrench before coming to this site ? I did my first engine swap, a 350 in a '69 Pontiac Tempest, about 20 years before I ever posted to this site. I don't know what year jjj's truck might be, but since most (though not all) 5.9s were put in Dakotas before the '00 change to the IFS front differential - I think C-bass could find my last post a valuable contribution. It's likely, but not for sure, that both trucks would have the same 9.25 rear. I fail to see how you are contributing anything to this thread.

They are Yukon. The fronts have never been installed, also have the minor install kit.
Rears have about 2k miles on them - don't have the install kit but will include good checker bearings for setting pinion depth.

Do you have an email address, we can discuss it off line here?

Kowalski, you and I differ on our political views, but you are a man of good charater, and you have tried to help a lot of people here, as I have. If you notice, these guys, never have anything helpful to say only try to put us down, even daddio has been hit, again not with anything helpful but to try to put down. I am trying not to post as much here because of it, still I do like to read as much as I can and see if I can help someone from time to time.
I think I know from your other post that you are trying to help people here, and those of us who have read your post and others know better than these other "Possers". I just don't like to see you, and daddio get put down by these persons of limited intelligentence.
Have a good day sir,
Dakota49

Thanks, I've noticed. It's obvious that they are cowards, afraid to use their usual screen names. I have no problem putting aside political differences to discuss trucks, on a truck website. Sounds like jjj's gears could work out for C-bass. The best decisions are made based on good information; and that is what this site is supposed to be about.

the reason Girl Scout can't answer or give advice(not advise) is that he probably lacks the experience or knowledge to offer up any help. so he must criticize those that do.

and Kowalski stated on the post right above hers "The best decisions are made based on good information". don't just rely on one persons reply. and if you don't like the answers you get here from people like Kowalski, modain, dakota49, and others look elsewhere.

in other words "do your own damn research!"

Daddio, even at that, you are giving too much credit to the poser, i can tell you exactly who it is.......lets see, he is approx 12-16 yrs old, spends too much time indoors, finds girls un-amusing,found this website on his dads favorites list on his computer and decided it was fun to start trying to screw things up by going negative on certain people, trust me.. this kid doesnt even have a drivers lic, much less own a Dakota. As soon as his dad unblocks the Hannah Montana website he will go away.until then it doesnt matter what he says we all know the regulars on this site and and if someone posts something stupid under your or someone elses name...dont worry we all know its not you without anything being said. They think we dont know who they are......we know
