Is the 8.25 axle in a gen II Dak the same width as the 9.25 axle from an R/T (Dakota or Durango)

No, it's narrower. Starting with the new generation in '97, the axles are wider (as is the rest of the truck). The 9.25 was also used behind most gen 3 v8 trucks, not just the R/T.
