Subject: transfer case clicking?

Message:
I have a 98 4x4 with a worn tranny...started a couple weeks ago, anytime the truck is moving over five miles an hour, whether its in gear or not, theres this clicking sound. annoying as hell. i can feel it through the stick, think it has something to do with the drive shaft, told it might be the transfer case. any ideas? thanks

Get yer butt under it and start looking for something that shouldn't be there, like something wrapped around the drive shaft maybe.

OR

If you DO NOT HAVE AWD,
Get the rear end off the ground and on jackstands (stands under the axle, not the frame). Put a trusted friend in the driver seat, and with the truck in gear, have him give it enough gas to get it to make the noise. You get underneath and try to track down the source. Or have the friend go under, once you get it to make the noise, so he knows what to listen for.

I found out some interesting details about the NP-231 trans case in all these daks and jeeps. The snap ring on tail shaft has a tendency to fail causing extra play in turn causing internal damage. I have a 2000 4x4 with the t-case chewed almost in half from the chain cutting thru the case like a chainsaw. It started with a clicking noise, I investigated and found my fluid level low so I topped it off. Sound continued, I really didn't know where else to look for problem. I continued driving it (work truck) until I could find some answers. One day I crawled under it to check it out again and to my amasement the t-case is almost sawn in two. No money to fix problem, I pulled front shaft and noise stopped. I am still driving it till I can get money to fix. As long as I don't need 4-wheel drive I'm OK for now. I would suggest you check for this possibility before it get's as costly as mine.
