I am trying to install a shift light and tach adapter from auto meter (9117). I found this website that did a good breakdown for the install in a mustang, but does anyone have a breakdown for a 2001 dodge dakota? This is the website so that you'll see what I'm talking about.
http://www.autometer.com/techinfo_newsarticle.aspx?yr=2008&mo=5&pg=1&aid=4

I've been trying to get this installed for a while, but I'm not very keen when it come to the electronics and reading the wire colors and connections. So any other help will be appreciated also, pictures would be awesome.

Assuming you have the 4.7 engine, from autometer's website

" Chrysler V-6 and V-8 engines with individual coil on plug ignitions can be much more difficult, and you should contact our tech support department before installation on one of these vehicles. "

Yeah, the 4.7 was in the title. I was trying to avoid calling/contacting autometer just because I figured I couldn't be the only one to install one of these in my truck and someone on here would be more helpful from that "been there done that" experience. Is autometer even available on Sunday? I guess I'll be calling them anyway...

I have two wires that still need to be connected. I have an Electronic Ignition and it says that I should connect one of the wires to the tach terminal of the electronic ignition. Not sure where that is.
The other wire is supposed to connect to the 12V ignition switch (+). I connected it to the green/orange wire coming from the coil on spark plug 1. Is this correct?

First.
The tach needle is positioned by the engine computer (PCM).
You may vave some luck, though if you can find which wire feeds the tach position signal to the instrument cluster.

Second.
Connect it to switched 12V. That means a fused 12V source that is ON only when the ignition switch is in START or RUN position. Lighter socket is a good example of a switched 12V source. Connect to the wire behind it.

Did they change that for '01 ? Lighter socket in my '00 is hot all the time.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Can't use the tach feed, there isn't one it is on the buss system.

I think you are going to have to cut into the harness under the hood, did you contact them yet?

Okay, I understand the 12V wiring now, but I guess the tach terminal is still questionable. Unfortunately, that's a pretty important wire and nothing works without it...

The '01 lighter socket is hot all of the time, so you are right kowalski. I'll find where my radio wire is are located and tap into that one. I remember my friend doing that on another car when installing subwoofers.

I tried e-mailing auto meter earlier this week with no response as of right now. Guess I'll have to call them which I'll probably do later today. Not too optimistic though.

Maybe it's different in mine. On dash, it's switched. In the center console, it's hot all the time.

Sorry for the misdirection on that.

FINALLY got a response from Auto Meter. This is what they wrote. I'd like to do this as I'm competent enough to perform this task, but I wanted to make sure everyone here thinks this makes sense... Let me know as soon as you can. Here is the tech's response:

"Requires 9117 and complete rewire of all 8 ignition coils. We recommend only an
experienced technician for the application. Dark green with Orange stripe at
each ignition coil gets cut and coil side of all cut grn/org wires will get
wired together, into the red/green of the 9117 adapter. The other cut halves
still coming out of the harness will all get wired together, then wired to the
solid red of the adapter. The gray wire of the adapter will now provide a good,
useable tachometer signal."

Please respond soon. I may do this either Thursday or Saturday. (it is currently Monday)

That is a hard way to do it. I'd think about whether I really needed that tach feed LOL

Might be able to do it using a cut in the dg/or wire prior to the engine - it comes out of the PDC and there is a splice (S187) near the PDC.

That wire feeds all of the coils AND injectors as well as other components.

OR S184 and S134 splices might get them all. Just looking off hand - right after splice S187 would be I think the best shot. Unless the injectors firing would screw the tach up????
