Subject: Lowest temperature for Closed Loop ?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi there.

In my 1993 Dakota 5.2 MFI VIN-Y, I changed the T-stat from 195 to 185 F.
With the AutoXRay I read the normal operating temperature from 178 - 181 F.

My question is, at which minimum temperature the ECM goes into Closed Loop?

I am confused about the very rare (for me) information I could get so far.

-In the specific Powertrain Diagnostic Manual is a chapter about the DTCs.
The topic of the code named "ECT Sensor Voltage Too High" and "... Too Low"
includes the "Theory of operation" of the Temperature Sensor etc... and therein
the book says, "If the engine is warm (above 125´F), the 5-Volt supply..."

-In another code "Engine Is Cold Too Long" there is explained in the description,
that the code is set when the engine not reaches the 174´F - Mark after 20 minutes.

So, which is the real basic temperature during warm up for Closed Loop ?
125`F, 174`F ... something completely different?

Thank you for your reply.

Thank you, for these links.

Regrettably they do not contain the desired information.
Maybe, I can´t find it. :-/

How about this? It's strangely worded, but here it is anyway, cut and pasted from my FSM CD.

P0125-INSUFFICIENT COOLANT TEMP FOR CLOSED-LOOP FUEL CONTROL

When Monitored: With battery voltage greater than 10.4 volts and after engine is started.

Set Condition: The engine temperature does not go above -10°C (15°F). Failure time depends on start-up coolant temperature and ambient temperature. (i.e. 2 minutes for a start temp of -10°C (15°F) or up to 10 mintues for a vehicle with a start-up temp of -28°C (5°F).

With your autoxray thing, can't you monitor open or closed loop status?
With my Scangauge II, I can watch it on my 4.7L, and it only takes about 10 seconds to go to closed loop from a cold start. That's all the time the O2 sensors need to get to operating temperature.

This OBD-2 Code seems to be the the correct trace.

I am sorry for my old car (and my funny english too).
Recently the Data Stream of a tested newer OBD-2 Ford
(sorry again for this bad word)
alows my autoxray 6000 to monititor the Loop Status, but the Live Data Stream of my 1993 OBD-1 Dakota does not.

For example the O2-Switching of the Dak is monitored.
Perhaps I could observe whether the switches (the monitoring into the scanner) are starting.
Maybe, it is immediately shown after the engine starts or after a specific temperature.

I will test it.

Thank you.

I found a good OBDI and OBDII cross-reference chart for you.
It is in order of OBDII codes.

Put it this way, a 160 degree thermostat is too low.

The issue here is the 185° thermostat, and what affect the engine's new operating temperature will have on emissions diagnostics.
No mention of 160° thermostat has been made, except in your post. Do you have any useful information to add to the conversation?

Right, I use a 185-Stat, which causes a steady 179 - 181´F measure
(was a warmer springday yesterday) at the ECM-Sensor.

I tested the starting of switches between Rich/Lean and the
voltage output of the O2. They begin a few seconds after coldstart,
and have no connection to any watched temperatur I could assume
as a step from cold to warm engine status.

Summarized I will assume that the value specified in the
manual is correct, provisionally.
Btw, at 125´F the gauge im my car starts moving the needle a very little above
(no, not above, this fat needle stil touches... ) the low mark.

Thank you, Josh, for you ideas.

You're welcome.
Found a couple web sites of folks who have installed 180° thermostats in their 4.7L engines, and have no problems.

Okay, try to keep up. If 160 is too low, more than that would be okay. Got it? So 185 is fine. All on the same page now?

Hey gen1dak. Your the one who's not keeping up.
They could give a sh1t about your stupid 160 t-stat so shut the f#ck up about it. You say 160 is too low. What evidence can you present to back that up? You stupid round mouth idiot!
