Wow i find it hard to believe that Texas Todd would be a dick like this, surely you are an imposter....using TTs handle why dont you man-up and quit using other peoples names.Anyway to try and answer the question.... the gears themselves arent that expensive unless you have a 4x4 then you have to do the front axle as well,i just went to "Jaws gear & Axle" and ordered the gears i decided on for my year and model truck with a master kit and had a friend install them.I dont think i would tackle it if yours is 4x4 and youve never done this before, just buy the gears and take em in to a local mechanic or shop in your area and have them do the swap,if your truck is two wheel drive then you could probably do it yourself over the weekend, even if your not that good with stuff like this.

ya TT is always some1 else, i just flat out ignore it, but i do have 2wd, and i did plan on doing it myself, but i need to know what gears to get, im thinkin 390-392 whatever the exact number is, but im thinkin 410s would kill my milage, i just want a quicker launch for cheap, so is the gear size vehicle specific? or if i need a 390 and i find a 390 from a GM will that work?

not sure if im making sense

does it matter what year and or vehicle i take the gear from, or just the size gears?

i'm not real educated on differentials but i'm pretty sure you'd have to use DC gears not Ferd or the General. what gears do you have now? and do you have an auto or manual trans?

the reason i ask auto or manual is, my truck has 3.55:1 and a manual. first & second are geared down so low i don't think i'd install 4.10:1. i'd go with 3.92:1.

will also depend on tire size.

if you're thinking about gears you might want to install a locker while you're in there too.

Gears are relatively expensive, unless you can install them yourself. I've never attempted it, but it appears to me to take similar skill and finesse to changing a cam in an engine. The gears themselves might be a few hundred dollars, but while your in there you may as well add a locker or limited slip (another few hundred), then add several hundred more dollars for a professional install. All together you could end up paying a thousand dollars.

So if you can do it yourself, you could probably get 4.10's if you are looking for more fun, or better even 4.56 if you don't care about gas mileage. But you said you wanted a "cheap quick launch" or something like that, so here's my honest advice:

Sell your truck now. Take the proceeds, plus the 1 grand you would have spent on gears, and go buy the nicest dakota you can afford -- with the 4.7. It'll almost certainly be faster than your 3.9, even with gears.

but thats just it, i want my truck quicker, not just any fast vehicle, i like tinkering and messin around, so i would do it myself, and currently im rebuilding a car and tinkering with the truck, so i have some cash, but not much, the cars where the speed comes from, but the truck id like a bit quicker, not looking for anything big, no turbo, no NOS, no engine swap, just lookin 4 do it myself projects on the truck that i will feel the gains and be proud of being able to have done it myself

basically, i wont ever take a vehicle 2 a mechanic unless absolutely necessary, if i can do it myself, i will, i get so much more out of it

if you've never setup the gears in a diff. you better find a good manual on it. check a couple of local shops. ask if they'll give you a quote.

depending on how "quick" you want it, it probably won't be cheap.
my motto

cheap, fast, reliable. pick 2 because you can't have all 3.

The real TexasTodd here.

The impostor is correct on this one. Too many people come here to ask questions and not add anything to the site. All of the questions have been asked and the answers can be found by a simple search.

Agreed..... but theres alot of new people finding this site every day and if they post up a worn out question,(or atleast worn out to us)and then they get blasted for it, they split and dont come back, theres always a better way to steer them to the answer than calling them lazy,or like me i read alot of these posts and they are boring so i just dont respond at all.But what surprises me is the guy that posts up a question like which tires are the best in mud or which shocks are the best and that gets like 50 responses......who cares.....its all opinion,we need fresh faces in here, every question in here could have already been answered at some point.

yes, im sure many people have asked the same question and i agree with u bucket, if it bores you, or upsets you, just ignore it, dont reply, let it be

the only reason i didnt search this topic, is because i was in the process of reformating my harddrive, and i didnt have the link to the search engine, now i do, which is how i figured out what gear size i want, how to figure out what size i have, and what axle size, normally i do search as well as post a question incase i cant find any information, or not the specific answer because i have a slightly different set up and im not sure if they would be the same

if you search www.car-part.com you'll probably find a complete rear w/ 3.92's in it for cheaper than having someone swap gearsets for you.

i found one with 32k on it 3.92:1 from a Dak for 400 bucks. add about 150 for shipping depending where you're at. you may find one you could drive to and pick it up.

i know a guy who is parting out a 2000 rt, i emailed him to see if he had the right gears, he has the drivetrain still, but not sure what ratio, and hes selling everything at chop shop prices, bought a perfect hood, 20bucks, he has the entire bed of the truck for 50

so i think this is my best bet

definitely because R/T's came with the 9.25" rear 3.92:1 gears and LSD. you could even get the rear sway too if the price is right.

yes it should work. you should have an 8.25 but that 9.25 should bolt right up in place of the 8.25.
