so yesturday i did a 0-60 for fun, stomped on the gas, and took off. i thought i read some1 saying that the wot shift point is around 4800rpm on a 5.9 l, what would it be on a 3.9? i want to shift at a higher rpm, and since im stuck with an automatic tranny, its frustrating

any ideas on how to safely shift higher without doin a tranny swap and makin it a manual? i guess messin with the TV cable can be messy when driving

please help, this is buggin the hell outta me, i just cant find a solution

adjusting the TV/ kickdown cable can raise or lower shift point rpm. you just need to consult the repair manual on how to adjust it. otherwise you could cause more problems.

if your engine is stock why would you raise the shift point past 4800? it's probably not making any more power after that anyway.

daddio is right, the power curve starts to drop at like 3800 rpm, shifting at a higher point wont even help you unless you have a high performance intake manifold like i do that flows better at higher rpms. things like more aggressive cams that produce more power at higher rpms would also be a reason to raise shift points. your best bet is to get a custom PCM flash if you really want to raise shift points.

no no no, thats wut they said theirs shifts at, mine shifts at 2000 all the time, which is y i want to raise it

i have the manual and know how to do it, but i have heard it can make my truck run funky even if i set it at 3000 instead of 2000, or is it safe enough to do that?

if it will just hurt my milage, im fine with that, but if it will cause other problems raising it to 3k or 4k tops, then i wouldnt want to

what do ya say daddio? is it safe to raise it to say 3500? or will i have other problems besides worse milage?

I am curious about this also. If the shift point is set at a safe 3000rpm, will i cause any damage? If there is nothing to worry about, then I will attempt it this coming weekend. Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

you didn't mention yours was shifting at 2000. you could raise it a little at a time to get it to 4800. i don't see a problem with it. redline is 5200. and it will probably help your mileage. shifting too early will lug the engine and burn more fuel.

you need to adjust it a little at a time and get it where you like it. 3000, 3500 3700, 4700 whatever.

ya, i should have been more specific and said mine was the 3.9 and his was the 5.9 that shifted at 4800, i think ill adjust it to 3500, i was just worried it would mess up my transmission, but if its safe, ill give it a shot, i can always put it back

Keep in mind that the redline on these engines is NOT actually where it is marked on the tachometer. I've taken my 5.2 up to the rev limiter at 5300 once or twice and on the dash it shows the redline being 4800.

The real redline on these engines is actually past 6000, because if you were to get a Mopar PCM (if you had a V8) it moves the rev limiter to 6000rpms.

Hope this helps, and remember when adjusting the TV cable to do it a little at a time because even adjusting it about 1/8" moves the shift point up a few hundred RPMS.

I have a stupid question, can you shift the transmission manually? What I mean is if you want the trans to stay in gear untill 4800 RPM why not just put the shifter in "1" then when you hit the RPM you want to shift move to 2, and so on. Mine is a 5speed so there could something with the auto's I don't know about. Or is that what he is doing putting the shifter in 1 then the trans shifts into the next gear at 2000RPM anyway?

daddio, thanks for the info, it would seem to me if you only needed to manually shift once while, that would be ok. I guess he wants it to shift like that every time he steps on it.
Thanks again
