Subject: hood scoop mounting
IP: Logged

Message:
so i got a new hoodscoop, and it doesnt have a lip to mount it to the hood, so this means i gotta mount it using bondo and fiberglass, not a problem, but im extremely worried over time, the airs gonna rip the scoop off

i plan on putting auto epoxy around where it mounts to the hood, then bondo after it dries, then fiberglass and sand and finish

i also plan on cutting the hole in the hood so its flush with the inside of the back of the scoop, so there isnt an airpocket that will force the back of the scoop off the hood and the air will just go down in2 the enginebay, any other tips?

welding is also out of the question, thanks, im stripping the paint off the hood as we speak so it mounts properly, so within the next2days, i want to start mounting, please help

Just pull the covering off the 3M adhesive tape and stick it down real good. It'll look so rice.

Bonding glass to steel can be tricky, so be carefull. Make sure your resin matches the resin on the scoop. You can also use glass specific bondo; again, make sure it matches the glass of the scoop.

I would use countersunk rivits to positivly attach the scoop to the hood. Then glass/bondo over that.

Perhaps I shoulda just asked what year is your Dakota.
I know a guy who did just what you're doing, and I might be able to get him to contribute, and give some pointers for you.

its a 2001 sport

heres the plan, im going to cut the hole obviously, then put j.b. weld on the entire bottom that touches the hood after sanding the entire hood down to bare metal, then while the j.b. weld is drying, im going to counter sink 2-3 poprivets up front where theres a lip, then when the weld is done drying, im going to bondo around the edge, then when thats dry, fiberglass around the bondo and past it by a few inches onto the scoop and hood for extra hold, then sand, primer, and paint, i probably dont need all of that, but i really dont wanna risk screwing up the entire hood and losing the scoop just because i didnt do 1 thing or another, and i know im overdoing it, but its more for sound of mind than anything

Who ever you bought the scoop from should be able to tell you what kind of resin to use. There's only 2-3 types.

I'm not sure JB weld is a good adhesive. I would use a good 2 part epoxy matched to the materials. Another trick is to drill some 1/8" holes along the bond surface. The epoxy, resin, and putty will extrude though the holes and grab on a little better.

JB Weld is a very good 2 part epoxy. It is intended espcially for bonding to metal and relatively high heat.
