not sure if any1 has talked about this b4, but i got a 01 dakota sport with a 3.9l engine, i wanna change the shift points so it shifts at a higher RPM since its an automatic, but i cant afford like 300bucks for a programmer which id use once or twice maybe for a week playin with it, do shops usually do ecu work and would they b able to change the shift points on my computer?

ballpark price for that kinda work? under 100bucks, 200bucks, 300+

im flat broke and would like this done cheaply as possible, its just for fun, but i know i want the shift points changed for certain, one way or another

spend 20 bucks on a Haynes or Chilton repair manual and find how to adjust the TV cable. can't help any more than that. thats why mines a 5 spd. i can shift when i want.

you can adjust shift points with the TV cable adjustment. the adjuster is located at the Throttle Body. if memory serves me, you have to push on a certain clip then slide the cable in or out. maybe one of the "auto trans" guys can elaborate.

i don't think the PCM controls any of the shifting on the 42RE(which is the model trans you have) like it does on the 45/545RFE that is behind the 4.7 v8.

Most shops don't do ecu (PCM) work like that, so you'd be looking at about $350 or up for a chip or custom flash if you had the 45/545RFE. But fortunately you don't, so daddio's advice (excellent as usual) will work for you. Transmissions shift depending on throttle opening as well as rpm. The TV cable daddio is talking about is how it senses the throttle opening for your tranny - so you can set it to shift at higher rpm when you're flogging it (assuming this is what you're looking for). Don't adjust it too far without trying it to see what difference the change makes.

How would you know that was how much you were changing it without testing it ? If you focus less on trendy text messaging shorthand, and more on real book learning, this shouldn't be difficult.

It should be in there, or it's not a very good manual.

my typing shouldnt affect anything, i type like that because its a habbit and quicker, thats not up for debate

and i would test it by raising it, look at how far it raised the shift timing, or how far it lowered it, one gear at a time

that's not how it works. if you adjust the cable, one way or the other if affects the shift point for ALL forward gears. not one at a time.

it could only take a movement of 1/32" to change it 500-1000 rpm. you don't know 'til you try. i'm sure in the FSM it tells exactly how to set it. and i've seen poeple post on here about setting it but, like i said earlier, mines a stick sooooo, unless someone else post up, you probably need to search a little.

well i didnt mean it as of course i know how, i meant of course id do everything in small amounts and test what type of difference it makes, instead of adjusting it very aggressively and ending up breaking something

i meant it like id be careful

Sounds like we're back on the right track. Not so much a problem with you breaking something, but wanted to warn you that it's very easy to throw this adjustment way out of wack. Good luck with the custom tuning, I hope you found it in the manual !

i found the tv cable, but not how to adjust it for shifting at different RPMs, but then again im not sure what it would be under or what to look for in the index

on a side note, any idea on how to take off the lid on top of the throttle body that hooks to the tube that leads to the air box? i took off the big nut on top of it, and disconnected the tube, but it doesnt budge and i dont like to force things im not sure about so i dont wanna break anything

Nope, my 4.7 has a very different design with it's sidedraft TB. I'd expect there to be an exploded diagram of that in the manual you just got ?
The TV cable adjustment should be in the section on transmissions.

If you know where it is, don't bother asking for help finding it. The second runner and the AC compressor look like they do on most other motors. I don't know if daddio might keep dealing with your know it all attitude, but I'm done.

well thats fine, ur missunderstanding me and getting pissy about it, i appreciate the help, but i meant i kno its on the 2nd runner on the intake, i read the write up on how to relocate it, problem is i dont kno where the 2nd runner is, but if your going to freak out after every little missunderstanding then thats fine if u dont wish to help, once again thanks for your help

if any1 can send me a picture, or tell me which side of the engine bay its on, or front or back or something like that, id appreciate it, but aside of the basic parts(block, heads, battery, radiator, etc)i have no clue what everything else in there does, i dont work on these type of vehicles
