Message:
I’m a new member that’s currently deployed to the “sandbox”, and will have a little money to burn when I return so………….

Here’s what I’ve got:
2001 SLT Club Cab, 4.7L, Auto Trans, 4x2, 3.55 gears, OEM wheels, 47k miles (been deployed half the time I’ve had it)

What I’ve done:
1. Removal of rubber flap next to radiator
2. Intense Performance Z-Tube w/9” S&B Pro Flow Filter
3. PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer (I know, but I installed it before I knew better)
4. Denso Iridium Spark Plugs
5. Magnaflow 3” Cat Back, model 15611
6. Superchips 3715 (currently running 91 octane program)
7. Edelbrock IAS Performer Shocks all around
8. Michelin LTX M/S tires (best I’ve ever had)
9. Royal Purple fluids throughout
10. K&N Oil Filter with FilterMag attached

What I’ll do when I get home:
1. Replace stock Y-Pipe with 2.5” in – 3” out Magnaflow Y-Pipe (I have no intention of removing any of the cats; I’ll have to pass Texas emissions again eventually plus I’m not familiar with the legalities involved)
2. Replace S&B Pro Flow Filter with new Volant PowerCore Filter (supposedly flows/filters more, water resistant, contains no oil)

What I’m considering:
1. Swapping stock throttle body with 68mm Fastman / 70 or 72mm F&B
2. Ceramic coated shorty headers, either JBA or Gibson. I’m not sure about this because I keep hearing about blown gaskets; I’d hate for that to happen in the middle of a road trip home.
3. Swapping stock thermostat with Jet 180 degree. I’m also wary of this because of winter performance, being stationed in Montana.

I’m not looking to race my truck, just to give it a little more “go” when I press down on the go pedal. I’d like to reap as much as I can while keeping it naturally aspirated and without tearing into the motor, being that my mechanical skills are limited to oil, plug, and belt changes. And in case anyone’s wondering, as it is now my Dak averages 13 city / 20 highway.

Any and all replies will be appreciated. Thanks for the assistance.

Have you considered HO or hotter cams ? You'd see more from that than the shorty headers and thermostat change.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realize until after I'd posted that I'd left the HO cams/intake manifold off the "considering" list. If I went that direction I'd have to find a good shop in Great Falls to install them for me, or find a copy of "Cam Installation For Dummies". (lol) Oil, plug and belt changes are about as mechanical as I've ever gotten.

If I do install them, do they necessitate the use of 91+ gas or can 87 still be used? That's one feature of the Superchips that I like; the ability to switch back to 87 for road trips and save a few cents here and there.

I'm assuming that using the SC tuner in conjunction with the cams/manifold would REALLY wake up the motor, even more so that it already has?

Again, thank you for the reply!

The cams won't require higher octane. Generally only increasing spark advance or compression does that. I felt the the cams were about as much of an increase as the custom PCM flash I got to increase spark advance, like superchips.

I found them at www.socaldakota.com

HO Camshafts $240/set
HO Intake Manifold $185 shipped

I also found cams at KRC, but they were $849. Seems a little steep, but what do I know?

They're also available direct from the dealer as Jeep 4.7 HO parts. Some dealers advertise discount pricing in some of the performance magazines. That's where I found a good deal on mine, years ago. KRC also sells hotter regrinds that come with heavier springs and the required lash caps so you have to scrutinze exactly what you are comparing - but they may be pricier for the HOs too.

That $849.00 you were quoted MUST be for the more radical "regrind" cams that come with the valve springs as well. Actually, that was more $$$ than they advertised for the cams and springs last time I checked.

I have the HO cams. If I could do it again, I'd have skipped those and went for the 206's (206 grind cams) or maybe 212's with the springs! It's a high revving motor. May as well wake it up a little bit and get some more higher RPM HP.

You know, I just looked at KRCPERFORMANCE website. I haven't in a while.
WTF HAPPENED to their pricing over there?
I am not sure if it's a mistake, but they have ALL cam sets at $849, and they only show the 224 and higher grind cams to have the valve springs included!!!
If you use the pulldown menu at the bottom of tha page it shows the 206's for $749

http://www.krcperformance.com/krc/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=28&category_id=7&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26

But still, their prices have SOARED in the last few years! WOW!

I don't hear anyone recommending KRC anymore. The last stories I heard were not good. Overpricing and poor workmanship will put them out of business real fast.

O.K. Seems like everyone here is agreed on the cams/manifold combo. Thanks for the input.

How about everything I've already done and am thinking about doing? Any suggestions for those or do you think I'm on the right track?

I don't have too much longer to go on this deployment; can't wait to get back to my Dak!

Thanks everyone!

Well, we all seem to agree on the cams anyway. I'm not so sure it's worth the $$$ for the intake to mostly just shift the powerband up a bit. I don't think there's quite as much gain there. Some of us have changed the cams only, to concentrate torque down low. Not trying to talk you out of the intake if that's what you really want; but we didn't all take that path.
GraphiteDak's done some clever intake experimenting, changing runner length himself. I think there's some interesting reading about that and some other experimenting he's done if you click on the picture at the bottom of his post for a link.

TRY www.OEMdodgeparts.com

for OEM stock HO cams.

they should be about the cheapest, for brand new HO cams.

Todd,
That's "Supply & Demand" for you, unfortunately.

Where you from in Texas? I'm from San Antonio, but now stationed in Montana. Traded in my '93 Dak at Gunn Dodge in S.A. when I got back from Korea in '01. Went to 6 different dealerships and could NOT find a 4.7 with a manual tranny (had one in my '93).

Kowalski,
If I understand correctly:
Cams only = low end torque
Cams/Manifold = more torque, but higher in the power band

If that's the case I'll take your suggestion and stick with just the cams. She seems to have plenty of power up top already; I've been looking to increase to low end grunt.

Now I just have to get back Stateside and make it happen :)

That's pretty much it, but cams only = more torque everywhere. A few dealers ordered the hot rods. I had to search to find my '00 v8 4WD RC, same dealer had a new '00 4.7 manual RC SLT with 3.92 gears. But 4WD is "must have" for me.
