other than a programmer and air filter are there anyways i can boost the gas mileage in it.

12mpg around town aint to good for me

would get a 4.7 5speed but the closest one to me is 500 miles away well the closest one i could find

If you want something with excellent gas mileage, a pickup is the wrong choice.

What a idiot.
Loves the truck, but disappointed in its performance and gas mileage. And the cost of a programmer and CAI are not gonna repay themselves in the gas saved. There's no break even point. Har har!
Like Josh said, get a car.

There are a number of ways to increase gas mileage. But, lets be honest. A 2 ton truck with a 5.9L engine is never going to get good gas mileage. It's always going to suck fuel, the question is just how much.

A real CAI and a computer retune will net you 1-2mpg. Big deal. But it will make the truck run better, so it's worth it.

Nothing else you do under the hood will make much differance in mileage. But, other changes might net you a little. Skinny light weight tires are always good - less mass to move, and less friction with the road. Of course, there's a trade off.

Making the truck lighter is a tried and true method. Improving aerodynamics might also be helpfull. That's what the manufacturer's are doing.

But, the best thing to do is change your driving habits. That's the only thing you can do that will pay off. Drive like a little old lady, and you'll save money.

Greg,

For the older magnum engines, I always say superchips, viper rockers, and TB. This could be had for $500 and will pick up bunches of power, probably around 40hp at the wheels and will definitely help in the mileage dept. Look into an electric fan swap with a Mark VIII fan - cheap on ebay but requires some wiring skills. Some say 10hp and 2 mpg, but i think thats a bit overinflated. A CAI will sound sweet, but thats about it.

A suspension drop would probably yield good mpg gains on the highway (due to a lot less frontal area). Reduce rotating mass by getting lightweight wheels and light, low profile tires. (I'm not a lowered truck kinda guy, but if it's done right, it would look good and help with mileage, acceleration, cornering, and braking.)

To the people who bash him for having a truck and wanting better mileage and performance - F%^K OFF. Who doesnt want better mileage? If I had a car getting 30, I'd be trying to figure out a way to get 40. Also, I know what he's saying about loving the truck and hating one or two aspects of performance. Is your truck perfect in every way from the factory? Why is this board even here?

Bottom line, I think the R/T is capable (after modifications) of 16 around town on summer blend and 20 highway (under 70mph) or even better. Having said that, take it with a grain of salt because I dont own one. I have, however, lightly modified several old magnum engines and witnessed the results. Just my $.02.

Greg,

I know I just made a long post about the 5.9, but after I thought about it, I would personally much rather have the 4.7 5-speed.

Get a set of HO, 206 or 212X cams for it along with a superchips and be done with it. Apply the same vehicle mods I mentioned in my last post and it will be a very quick, very fun to drive truck. IMHO, probably more fun than an R/T. Plus it will get much better mileage (20/24ish depending on driving style and how wild your cams are).

FWIW, I know there is a short throw shifter available for the NV3500, which will further help the fun-to-drive factor.

I currently own a 4.7 4WD Auto. I love it. I'm not trying to turn this into yet ANOTHER 4.7 vs 5.9 thread, as both engines can hold their own, but the 4.7 loves to rev and just "feels like it wants to go". I just wish it were a 5-speed like my 2000 RC V6. I wanted one, but just like yourself, I couldnt find one. If I had to do it over again, I would hold out and wait for a 4.7 5-speed in my area.

Good luck,

Jay

milt....

What do you mean you couldn't find a Dak w/ a manual tranny? Oh, do you mean used?

In 2001, I researched some, used edmunds.com, and created my own build sheet, including the manual tranny, and had a shop order it for me, and got it all at invoice pricing.

01 SLT QC, two tone paint,
OEM fender flares
Cab high Leer cap w/ double slider window,
Infinity sound,
Tire and handling pack,
Trailer towing pack,

4.7 manual,
HO cams,
HO intake,
Ported the stock 68mm TB,
Homebrew 'true' CAI, w/ K&N
No belt driven clutch or cooling fan
No third cat.
SuperChips Tuner

Max dyno, NO short belts, etc.
227 RW HP
300 RW TQ

Hey Todd,

Yeah, I meant used, lookin for a 4.7 4WD QC - there just werent any available. You can't custom order a used ;-). oh well. Maybe in a few years I'll order one new. Do they make the new 4.7 with a manual? I havent even looked. THAT would be a rocket.

How does your HO cams get along with the superchips? I've been debating between the HO cams and 206's. I'm after low end torque and maybe a little top end, but mostly with fuel economy as a driver (or justifier). I've heard 10% gains in mpg with the HO cams but I think thats BS. Did you notice a gain in mpg or have you been able to keep your foot out of it? I've been contemplating a used oem TB to bore to 68mm myself, but had the same concerns over low-end torque and mpg. Both were helped when I put the 318 TB on my old V6, didnt know if it would help the 4.7 the same way. sorry for getting off topic, I just checked your mods and noticed some things I have and want to do.

Thats about all I'm going to do to my engine except for maybe a taurus fan, and I want to start some aero mods. I'll be starting a new thread on that.

Jay, why don't you just remove the clutch and clutch fan and run with just the factory aux electric fan?

I thought the new 4.7 wasn't really any faster, due to the extra weight of the new style ? Extra horsepower pushing extra weight can be a wash.
