Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on having worn rings replaced on a 1997 318. Ive got a major blow-by problem and cant figure it out. Im going to have to have someone look at it but want to make sure Im not getting ripped off on price.

Is it on one cyl or all. How many miles are on the motor. How much of the work are you going to do. If your rings are bad there is probably a lot more wrong than that. Scuffed piston skirt, cyl walls are probably shot and maybe some nice little metal shaving to take out your bearings.

If your doing the rings mind as well just rebuild the motor since every part needs to come apart except the heads. Or you could pick up low mileage one for pretty cheap.

the cost for the rings would be around $50 but you will also need some gaskets, and labor, that's where the price goes out of control.
Good Luck

like dakota49 mentionned,

it's all the 'might as well replace it
while everything is apart' stuff that will costs more than just rings.

water pump, thermostat, hoses, coolant,
every gasket, cylinder head resurfacing,
timing chain etc

If you're going to replace the rings on just one cylinder you may as well do a total rebuild or simply replace the long block with a rebuild.
