I know this has been posted before, but I really enjoyed reading this again here at work.

I've had my 4.7 since 2001, and still love it!

How are they getting 60 more HP and 30 more ft/lbs, out of the same motor? Just cause it has two plugs? They tweaked something well!

-2 plugs per cylinder,
-higher compression
-new cylinder heads with better flowing ports
an more efficient combustion chamber

and most likely better engine management by the computer, fuel and timing curves.

all stuff that 'should' of been done a few years
after the initial production of the 4.7

Makes me wanna trade my 4.7 in for that one! Ever since I threw larger tires on the truck, it just hasn't been as ballsy going up hills on the highway. (even with a Jet chip) And I wouldn't mind getting the extra fuel mileage!

in almost all cases, larger tires should be paired with new gears and you wont have that problem

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Hey Guys,

I have an 01 4.7 that I'm thinking about doing some mods.. My question is this: Can I get a 4.7 HO motor from a wrecked 06-07 vehicle and swap it out? I know I will have to get the wiring harness and computer to make it work, if its possible..

I'd expect a compatibility problem; trying to run a Dodge with a Jeep PCM - may not interface properly with your gauges, etc. Not 100% sure though. You could start by trying a boneyard regular 4.7 '01 Jeep PCM in your truck; to see if it might be compatible.

Kowalski,

Good tip! I may try to scrounge one up to see if it works.. I was more hoping to get the 4.7 HO out of a newer wrecked Dakota though.

Myron - Sorry, missed that - guess I'm used to people wondering about transplanting the Jeep HO motor before an HO was available in the Dak. Many have wondered about that in the past, and I've never seen anyone report back that they came up with a solution that interfaced everything properly. You wouldn't be able to tell by trying a regular 4.7 PCM from a late model truck in your '01 though; at a minimum because they changed how a tone ring reports through the years. I believe they also changed how the PCM connects to the wiring harness. If the Jeep PCM worked, you'd also want to check on how the tone ring count in the HO may have changed through the years - don't know if that may have changed too ?

Is there something wrong with your 4.7 ? It's been reported that most of the torque from the old HO package could be had from the cam swap. That and more ignition advance will wake up the regular 4.7. Hotter cam grinds are avilable as well. But the older HO heads sound like they were only a little better; while the new ones sound like they may have been substantially improved - so I see why you're after the newer HO...

Kowalski,

Nothings wrong with it. I'm just wanting to do something with it now that its paid for, I bought it used 3 years ago and it has been a great truck. My wife hit a deer the other day and I have to replace the lower bumper cover and fog lights and I got to thinking It would look better with a one peice color matched bumper. I used to have a Durango that didnt have any chrome and I like the look of that front end better.. I figured that while I was at it, I should boost the power up a bit as well... I have seent he KRC cams and HAve considered that rout as well. I kinda figured that if I could get an HO from wreck I could then do the mods to that motor while it was on the engine stand. My brother is deep into the Neon SRT scene and he has turbols laying around so I have considered that as well. Scotty, I need more POWER!

Greg,

I'm looking at a big jump in horsepower but not a huge increase in torque with the HO.. HAve you done mods to both or either? If you have some insight that would be great.. If you think the KRC cams/Throttle body and a CAI with a PCM upgrade will get me close than I'm cool with that...

I think the reason that the new ones aren't that impressive with the extra power is because they are heavier. Moving more weight requires more power...

Texas Todd whats up, are you still with the fire dept?

Yes I remember my first Gen 3 dakota i bought came with a 5 speed manuel and also a 4.7 V8. What a great truck. Then I got a GMC Serria 4.8 4 auto and never really wanted anything else. But now I'm stuck with a Ranger although I would favor the last generation Dakota with a Hemi transplant. I think I could use the 65 REF and it should fit just fine.
