Subject: 2.5....? IP: Logged
Message: Well, my parents bought me a 99 dak club cab 4cyl 5sp as my first truck (they parents bought me the 2.5 cause they know how i like to drive :p) and baisically im just looking for tips of how to make it a little quicker upon takeoff. Belive it or not, it does preety good once i get it going. But its the takeoff that kills me. I know that they make a superchip for the 2.5, but honestly, running on premium gas gets expensive. Is there anything ya'll can think of that can make it a bit quicker? Exhaust job? Air intake?
Thanks

Message: Well for the super chip there is an 87 octane setting and a premium fuel setting. You can choose to run on 87 octane like I have chosen to do and you can feel some differences from stock.
As far as exhaust there are plenty of choices out there, stop by a muffler shop and speak with them.
You can also make you own Cold air intake from your choice of filter and tubing.
Just try searching for home brew cold air intakes and you should find all the info you need on that.
A lot of the stuff you can do to the 3.9L can be done to the 2.5L. Try looking at old post in the V6 section you'll probably find some useful info there.
Good luck

Message: The first thing to do is reprogram the computer - Superchips, Hypertech, whatever. That's the most bang for the buck on newer vehicles. (I'm an Old Guy, so "Older Vehicle" means anything built since 1985 or so).
Most reprogrammers offer you a choice - mid grade or premium tune. The premium tune is for max effort vehicles only. For general daily use, I think the mid-grade program is better. More economical to feed, and I couldn't feel a performance differance between the two.
Other go fast changes start to get a lot more expensive and time consuming for the dollar. Cold air intake is worth it, if you build it yourself. Cat back exhaust isn't worth the bux to me; not enough improvement for money spent. Same for fancy ignition systems.
Consider changing the rear gear ratio. That will make a huge improvement. 3.93 or 4.11 will wake up the truck on launch, and might even improve your highway gas mileage.
If you have big fat off road tires, get rid of them. Too much mass to spin and too much drag on the pavement.
