Subject: rear end noise?

can help anybody? I have a 00 dak quad-cab 4.7 5 speed manual 3:55 open case 9.25 with around 160000 miles on it. this past january I had to replace the front pinion bearing & race.I,ve never worked on a rear end before so I asked a cousin for some advise, it sounded easy but like a true dummy I dident replace the crush sleave nor did I marked the ring & pinion position or measured the space between the gears, like now I found out I should have. I thought it went well but day before yesturday it started whinning whenever I let off of the gas while in gear if I shift into neutral it quiets. My question is how bad did I mess up and is it fixable. Any ideas greatly appreceated thanks

It depends on how much damage is done. All you can do is pull the rear cover off and inspect the gear set. First look in the diff for metal and clean it well with brake or parts cleaner. Next look at the teeth on the ring and pinion. If they are sharp or have pieces missing you gonna need to rebuild it. Its tough to say but I think since you don't have to remove the ring gear to get to the front pinion bearing and if it didnt clunk before you replaced it than you backlash (the space between the gears) was ok, however when you didn't replace the crush sleeve proper bearing preload wasn't able to be applied and that probably cause the bearings to fail which would cause the backlash to change which is why you would hear a whine in it under load.

well, if you were thinking about changing gears up to 3.92:1 or 4.10:1, nows the time.

update: I went under the truck today to see whats up. I noticed the yoke was real loose, so I removed the drive shaft put a socket on the nut and tightened it with a pipe at the end of the rachet, then test drove it with no more noise at all.I even got it up to 90 mph and slowed it down by down shifting only and still no noise, but I'm still conserned about not replacing the crush sleeve. Does anyone think that will be an issue later on down the road or should I still open her up to see inside. Thanks again for your replies

For the price of a tube of RTV sealant and a couple of quarts of gear lube, it's cheap insurance to have a look inside you diff for any potential problems (metal shavings, loose parts etc.) and avoid more expensive problems later.

It will probably back off again once the sleave is crushed its done.

yep, definitely a time to install that locker and lower gears. as shadetree said, it'll probably back off again. so, if you keep driving it you'll be in for some expensive repairs.

results: after taking the cover off I saw a little bit of shavings at the bottom, so I'm thinking of replacing everything. I found a master kit for $170.00 and the ring& pinion for $220.00 its the same price for 3:55,s ,9:93,s and 4:10,s now I cant decide which to go with, since my truck is a daily driver and I occacionaly drive out of town I,m wondering about mileage and hwy driveability right now I,m getting around 10 or 11 mpg city and 15 or 16 mpg hwy. can anyone tell me what to expect with either?sorry for asking so many questions but I,d rather get all the facts from people that know these trucks. thanks a million for all the help!!!

A little bit of fine metal shavings is normal. How did the gears look were they sharp on the edges or missing any pieces?
If you dont tow or haul heavy loads I would probably stick with the 3.55's, but if you want better acceleration Id go with 3.92. This will still provide decent mileage, however I do beleive that there are guys on here that have installed 4.10 and report an increase in the mileage as well. If this is a 4x4 just remeber whatever you put in the rear diff you have to put in the fron diff also.

Wilky - Any idea why your city milage is so low ? Lots of traffic jams ? I get a solid 15 mpg out of my '00 4.7 with 4.10s; backroads or highway. That's with no effort at efficiency. The 4.7 seems to like the revs. Good bit quicker than when it had 3.55; and like Shadetree mentioned, I saw a slight increase.

with the 5spd manuals ultra low 1st gear & 4.10's you'd never use 1st unless you were towing.

shadetree: the gears were not chipped but I noticed an edge, but don't know if it,s acceptable or not and it,s a two wheele drive. Kowalski: I can,t figure out why the mpg is that low. I live in Laredo Tx. so the terrain is flat, there are traffic jams but not that bad. I drive about 212.?? miles a week and it takes about 19.??? gals to fill er up, I use regular unleaded gas I think it,s 87% octain I don't know if that would have anything to do with it. I do regular maintenance like oil change every 3000 miles, plugs every 9 months I use the oem champion plugs and fram air filter every 12000 miles. I don't haul real heavy stuff often if ever.Daddio: I don't think i'll go with the 4:10's, so I'm leanning towards the 3:92's but don't know. I have a friend with a shop I'll ask him to take a look and see what he thinks about the condition of the gears that are on now, since he'll probably do the work on the rear end. Because I don't feel comfortable with my knowlage in doing it. what do you think? thanks again for the help...

87 octane is what you should be running, should be another reason for the low milage.

in my opinion, 95% of the time when the rear statrs making noise it's too late for the gears.

I agree with daddio, Ive only had one or two instances in the 5 years Ive been working on rear ends where I was able to save gears with an edge on them especially when they are noisy.

one more update: I finaly took my truck into a shop that does alot of work on disferencials to get it fixed hopefully once and for all. They told me that the gears and bearrings were toast, I just got it back today. I went and left the oem 3:55's on I figure I'm getting too old to be running my truck like that besides the more I baby it the less repaires I'll have to deal with, and the less I have to dig into my wallet.Well thanks alot for all the help and advise
