I put in a 5.9 magnum in place of the 5.2. Everyone says you need to change the pcm. So I get a pcm pull out the old mopar 5.2 performance pcm install the 5.9 and low and behold it causes the engine to run like crap, no performance what so ever. So I put the old pcm back and look out this thing turned into a monster. runs great and throws your head back like a PEZ despenser... So what is up with that? I have checked the part number on the pcm. I called the dealer and gave that to them and they told me what I had. 5.9 magnum 2wd auto trans from a 93. Same as what I have. The only difference is that it came out of a full size truck a d-150 I think is what they told me. Now does anyone think if I took this to the dealer and had them do the updates on it that it would fix the problem or not? any help... Thanks

The performance 5.2 computer will run a stock 360 Magnum. It has better fuel curves to feed a modded 318, so it'll cover a stock 360. The quicker ignition advance curves give the whiplash acceleration. It'll be good til you start modding the 360 to the point that it needs more fuel than the 318 pcm can deliver. The dealer cannot flash any sort of update on those computers.

I kinda figured that this thing was modded as far as I could go without NOS or a supercharger. Here is what I put in it. Top to bottom.
52mm TB
M-1 intake
1.7 RR
1.92 R\T heads Port\polish
10.5 pistons
5.9 roller cam stock
Eagle H-beam rods
Eagle crank
I guess what else can I do to it without putting a supercharger or NOS on it. I would think that is modded, maybe I am wrong. I installed a 360 computer and it won't run right.
Thanks again

Hotter than stock cam, that's about it. Doesn't amke sense that the 360 PCM wouldn't work unless it's faulty somehow.

That is what I am thinking, That the PCM is somehow bad. Do you think that it needs to go through a relearn?

Those PCM's do not learn. They can adapt, and even that term is a bit misleading. They have pre-programmed info that they access when they get input from the sensors. The only things you really change with mods are primarily gonna be O2 sensor readings, MAP sensor readings, and, to a lesser degree, coolant temp. Based on that, the computer will use what it has to deliver what the engine needs. The later OBDII units (1996 and newer) are more learning-oriented and can require a couple-hundred miles to "learn" what to do (again, within limits). With the OBDI like in 1992-95, you just crank it up and go. It's either working, or not. So, no, I'd say it's most likely toast and in need of replacement. Your main decision is stock, or performance model? Remember, the performance model will have a quicker ignition curve, typically requiring premium gas to avoid pinging. Add to that the (did I read that right, 10.5 to 1 compression?), you might be better off with the stock computer. You may be okay now, but a hotter cam will increase cylinder pressure and that may put you into a pinging situation). The higher CR is the wrong way to go if a blower is in your future as well, so let that steer your future mods decisions. If you do continue modding, you will eventually exceed what the 318 computer can provide in gas. You will need the 360 computer to handle the higher air and fuel volumes being required.
