I have a the 6 with 172,000 miles...without rebuilding it with new rings and gaskets, how long do you think it would hold up to a turbo. Also how much boost can these engines handle? Ive been searching the internet trying to find information on how much boost I could run, but I have been unsucessful. I would also need I new clutch, same old stocker...

Are you wanting to blow up your engine? I wouln't think you'd try to throw on a turbo w/out rebuilding first since your at 172K. But it's yours and yours to do with. From what I've read 6 pounds of boost is safe for stock internals.

it's not the internals so much as the head gaksets. but, if you're going through the work and expense of adding a turbo, then yes with that many miles a rebuild would be wise.

besides, with the rebuild you could buy the new parts with the boost in mind and run more than a mere 6psi.

almost forgot, if you're not familiar with turbos and willing to do the work yourself, you better have a fat wallet.

by the way here is a little reading for you:

I'm putting a turbo on my truck for only about $1000.00 from e-bay.

Now how long it will last...

1hot, you talking about the motor or turbo?

for 1k you must be doing all the work yourself.

if the turbo is in question, there are places out there that can rebuild them. if it's been abused and sitting on a shelf for a while the seals could be gone. you'll find out as soon as you start your truck with the turbo on.

OK, so i get that I would need to rebuild my motor. This would include gaskets and seals right. I would need metal head gaskets, and ARP harware for the heads. Would this be the only things needed?

Thanks for the info though...

you could benefit from a lot more things. like larger valves, the proper cam, intake and head porting, etc.....

remember, it's not any one component that will give you the performance you want. it's the whole enchilada. it's how well all those parts work together.

you can't just say, Hey, i'm gonna put a turbo on my motor and see what happens. well, you can but you'll waste a bunch of time and money and hate it.

research, research, research.

did you go to the webpage i posted earlier?

I'm not sure which one will go first, engine's got about 125K on it and the turbo was a cheapo knock off I think.

Fortunately, I'm doing all the work myself. It's fun and educational at the same time. Unfortunately, its a major pain in the ass, but with a thousand dollar budget, it's quite necessary.

From my conservative calcs, I'm guessing I'll have about 345 hp at 6psi.

I found, by using the Garrett site, that I can run 6.3 psi to get a total horsepower of 270. The efficiency of the T04E 57 Trim turbo compressor map that I referenced would be in the optimum efficiency range throughout the entire RPM range, without dipping off into inefficiency and back the other way to the surge line. I decided that the .50 cold/.63 hot A/R ratios would be great for the street....

The AFR would be 12:1...which would help decrease detonation....How can I alter this, would I need a standalone, or is there a program that I can use alter the computer myself?

Thanks alot for the website, it is what I needed to know because Im always in the search for power, and this would be a great project to learn about it all.....

And I would be doing it myself, just to let you know, so i can save money....

you can do a rebuild without completely overhauling the motor.
with that many miles, the main concern would be the bearings. it
would be best to replace all the bearings in the motor before they
see boost.

stock internals can handle more than 6 psi of boost, but the head
gaskets wont unless it's perfectly tuned. I ran 8 psi of boost on the
V6 i had and it blew a head gasket twice... but very poor tune.

Can I just get the gaskets at the local O'Reillys or Autozone or will I have to order them. I agree, the engine has seen better days.

I would feel better with new rings, rehatched cylinder walls, and bearings throughout...

Also, after I rebuilt it, I would need to break it in for 1500 miles or so to make sure everything is alright then wouldnt I?

Also, tuning, is there I book that you recommend for me to read, or the parts that you used for the fuel system because that is my major hangup...I realize that I would need a new fuel pump, and possibly new injectors, but also maybe a computer?....Can I boost it without a standalone and just changing the timing....

So basically in this past week, Ive realized that I need to do WAY more research and parts chasing before I decide to do this.....

...Maybe I should do a blowthrough carburator setup and do away with the fuel injection all together....seems to me it would be easier....

Yeah:
345 at 5200 rpm. How long? I don't know.

I do have a 4.7, not a 3.9, so 345 at the crank with 6psi shouldn't be an impossible number.

UMR,
I believe you can use a standalone unit and modify your timing. I know Duner was running 5 psi on a stock computer when he wasn't at the track.

IMO. if you want to get the most out of it no matter waht boost you'll need a standalone system and some dyno time to tune it.

or as i've mentioned before you could find a wrecked '86-'87 buick turbo regal or grand national and swap the drivetrain in. stock they were 260hp & about 325lbft torque. another grand and you'd be close to 12 second 1/4's in an RC dak. would be a sweet hybrid.
