does removing the assembly help with horse power & gas mileage. and is the stock eletric fan enough to keep the motor cool.

Yes on all accounts. Depending on your location in the country it might run a little warmer in the summer.

Not yes on all accounts...

If you live in a hot climate I wouldn't remove the mechanical fan. I've had the mechanical fan kick in while driving on the freeway in 120+ degree temps. I also noticed the engine get hot when the fan clutch went bad and driving in the same conditions, had to slow down and turn off the AC to keep the engine from overheating.

If you tow heavy loads with the truck, don't remove the fan clutch either. I wouldn't attempt to tow my 3500# boat without the mechanical fan as I have had the fan clutch engage while towing up grades in normal temps, 70-80 degrees.

Low speed, heavy load situations (offroading) could also be too much for the electric fan to handle.

If you don't operate under these conditions it's worth a try for improved performance and mileage.

i removed my fan clutch on my '00 about 3 yrs ago. never overheats even idling in traffic. but as DSW stated, if you drive under any of those conditions you may overheat.

01 5.9 and towing a 4500+ boat/trailer to the FL Keys have never had it run hot. Fan has been off since day one. The mech. fan doesn't engage until it is fairly hot - I checked at one time but can't remember the temp. well over 220 if I am not mistaken.

Note though - your cooling system better be in really good shape if you live in a very hot area or tow heavy loads.

Adding another electric wouldn't hurt though if you are worried about it.

I will say I have never been in 120 temps though.

You could always try it and just keep the stock fan inside the truck, takes 2 sec. to reinstall.

My 4.7 has had my belt driven off for over 4 years, no clutch, no fan, more HP/tq
I do have the 180 degree T-stat, and I tow a sailboat some, and it Never overheats.

I could see replacing a regular fan with a clutch fan or maybe a flex fan; but I wouldn't spend $$$ to replace a good clutch fan with a flex.

I live in PA too, never had a problem.
Only time mine ever ran warm (not even close to overheating -2/3 guage) was sitting in South Beach Miami on a 90 deg 90+ humidity day - stuck in traffic with the air on.
Shut the air off and it cooled right down - mind you for some reason just that one day.

no need for that switch. the factory elec fan comes on for 2 reasons:
1) demand for a/c and engine temp above 130 F
2) engine temp of 210 F. (which is the middle of the gage.)

It just unspins off of the water pump - well not quite easily but that is it.

Did the 3.9 come with both fans?
