with NO plans of forced induction or nitrous in the future...

gonna have a 360 (maybe 408) built. should i spend the extra $500-600 for the forged pistons?

what do you guys think?

do you have something else you could use that money for? you shouldn't need forged if your not going forced induction, nitrous or high compression. spend it on valvetrain maybe?

yeah thats what i was thinking too... spend the money on other mods like an M1, throttle body, or headers instead

i am planning on running higher compression but not too much higher. something like 10 to 1 or a little higher. (stock compression is around 9.1 to 1) but i wouldnt need forged pistons just to run higher compression right?

are forged pistons worth the cost for the added reliabilty?

There are basically three types of pistons generally available:

Cast: Stock replacement. An excellent choice for most engines. See limitations recommended above. Inexpensive, reliable. They are quiet when cold, and generally don't change shape/size with heat.

Forged. 2-3 times the cost of cast. Much stronger for those severe applications listed above. They tend to grow more than cast, and so need a little more piston to wall clearance. That makes them a little more noisy when cold. They also tend to rock more when cold, making them a bad choice for daily commutes of less then 10-20 miles or so. For non-severe duty applications, there is absolutly no performance advantages.

Hypereutectic: Sort of a betweener. Stronger than cast, not as strong as forged. Fit and operation like cast. Slightly more expensive than cast, cheaper than forged. This is an excellent choice for the vast majority of performance machines in the US. Especially those that double as daily drivers.

Get the JE SRP forged pistons. I think I paid like $320 for my .030 SRP pistons. Which wasn't much more than most hyperuetics, and cheaper than other forged pistons. I also went with higher compression. It's called piece of mind. Just because you don't plan on doing any other mods, why not build the motor to take more than what you plan on? If you only build it to meet what you want, then it won't be able to handle anything more should you change your mind in the future. It's far cheaper to spend a little extra money now to get better parts than to have to re-do the same mods in the future. Check with John Mercedes for great prices on the pistons, and you can try to shop around other places for better, but I think you will have a hard time. www.manciniracing.com is a good place to comparison shop.

Well, it seems my last post didn't make it up here.

JE brand SRP Pistons. Forged pitons for the price of hyperuetics. Definitly worht it. Why only build the motor to meet your current plans?? Build it stronger, and not only will it last longer, but it will be able to handle more should you change your mind in the future. Cheaper to spend a little extra now on better parts than to have to re-do the same mods in the future. John Mercedes is an excellent source for the SRP pistons and probably the best price you will find for them as well. I think I piad $320-$340 for my .030 over higher compression pistons.

If you can get that price I would go with forged. Check the weight of them compared to the cast though. My firebird forged pistons are quite a bit heavier than the stock ones. If your sure your not going N20 or Forced induction I would find some light forged pistons. When its balanced the crank counterbalance will also be much lighter. Dropping fast moving rotating mass can add quite a bit of power.
