Subject: 4.7 to 360 swap
IP: Logged

Message:
my 2000 Dakota SLT ext cab just turned over 200K, and I have a neighbor that just rolled his 98 SS/T Ram 360 with 44K.

Does anyone know how hard this swap would be???
Are the K-members different in the 2000 4.7 SLT Dakotas compared to the 2000 R/T dakotas?

I am not sure about the frames but it looks like the motor mounts are different and you can't use the 4.7 transmission on the 5.9 or the PCM since they are totally different in spark control, etc.

I don't even think the power difference would be worth it. While u will gain some low and mid range power the 5.9 revs over 1k rpms less as well (stock). You could rebuild that 4.7 with some high compression pistons and 212 cams, etc and walk away from a stock 5.9 no problem. Not trying to get a flame war going again on 5.9 mods vs 4.7 but just saying for the work you could just put some $$$ into the 4.7 rebuild and not have a retro job on your hands :)

I thought that the transmissions from the 3.9, 4.7, 5.2, and 5.9 were all the same? I figured since Mopar stayed with the NV3500 with the 4.7 that I would have assumed that the bellhousings would be the same. I have heard of people using Tremec swaps on the 4.7s and the website just says '98 to '03 Dodge Dakota V8. I think that they should be the same then. If I already had a 4.7 I would just keep it. They are great motors. I am extremely impressed with them. A buddy had one with a 212 cam swap, port heads, bigger throttle body, exhaust, 5-speed, 3:92s in the rear. It is a beast. I tried to mess with it yesterday from a roll and good lord did he rape me. I know that I just have a 3.9, but I did not figure it would be that bad. He left off around 100mph and still had a lot more to go. I know that we have murdered numerous full-size GMs with it. I love it.

While the bell housings may be the same, the 45RFE and 545RFE transmissions used behind the 4.7's are unique in their planetary gear design. These transmissions have electronic controls that differ from the others; this would be in the '00 4.7 PCM - but PCM's to control the other motors won't run those transmissions.

Thanks for the replies, but the cost of a rebuilt 4.7 is hard to swallow for a stock engine. Jasper engines lists theirs for $4194.oo
AutoZone lists theirs for $3984.oo both engines come with a 3 year warranty.
My neighbor sold me his whole truck today for $1000.oo which gets me the engine, trans, computer, wiring harnes. The truck also has the Edelbrock RPM heads and RPM cam. The truck was dynoed after he installed the heads and cam and it was putting out 353 WHP. Im also looking into the Hughes 360/426 stroker kit.

I havent pulled either engine yet, but I will make it work. The reason I am doing this swap is my 4.7 is burning about 2 quarts of oil a month and has a really bad knock.

Musta been my laptop wigging in my work truck here.

I agree the 4.7 is expensive to buy new or rebuild if you replace EVERYTHING. A used running one isnt too bad.

Anyway. Nice to know you got 200k out of the 4.7 by time it got so worn.

I was curious if you babied it those miles or if you drove it sort of hard like many of us do?

Sounds like a great project best of luck!!But I am wondering when he rolled the truck was it on its top or did it roll back upwright? Not to alarm you but if that motor was upside down for a while it could of caused damage that you wont tell wright away just on a startup hope its not good luck.

Nope, GraphiteDak she isnt babied that much, she is a TRUCK... hauls lumber/hay, Pulls a cattle/horse trailer, 20' X 8' pontoon boat to the lake on weekends, goes to the track occasionally, and is my daily driver to the average of 32,000 mile a year, I live about 2 miles down a red dirt road so she is deffinitly not a beauty queen.... but the oil is changed once a month & other fluids evry 6 months.I love her...just not the high prices on major parts.

Shoe thanks for the info.

No Josh, it came to rest back on its tires, but the HWY Patrol said he counted atleast 4 flips on its side judging by the marks left in the field, the frame is twisted pretty bad, it starts and yard drives.
NO SMOKE when its running!!!

Cool. I'm glad it held up as good as the other Mopar V8's then.

Let us know how it goes. If you have a manual 4.7 it would be an easier swap. But as long as you swap everything and hope the interface form the gauges to the PCM is the same then you will be ok.

That is why on my swap I am switching every single wire in the truck. It may take a little bit, but I think that the reward will be worth it.

The 5.9 would be the hardest for sure. It is so hard to find the 5-speed equipment for it. The 318 swap would be much simpler. I would rather have a 360 either day, but probably stroked to a 408. I am talking a torque monster. A ATI procharger would also be very fun to mix into the equation. Add a built 5-speed and you have one fun truck to drive. Oh Yeah!

Josh, I used to think a stick shift was fun, but I drive a semitruck for a living, its got 18 gears. Driving a stick at home just doesnt put a grin on my face anymore.
Besides, that 408 is going to put out major TQ and the back of these trucks are really light so you would be able to SHREEEEEEED the tires at just about any speed with an auto. Just step on the gas. That still leaves one hand & arm free to put around your Best Girl.

Yeah, 18 gears would suck. I grew up on standard transmissions. This will be my first automatic to ever own. I hope that it treats me well.

My '01 RC 4.7 NV3500 has 169K on the clock, and uses NO oil between 5K Mobil1 5w30/NAPA 1085 oil changes. I carry about 350-400 pounds in the bed, 50/50 city/hwy, working 28K annually. This 4.7 is way ahead of the '92 5.2 I took to 217K. The 5.2 used a full quart every 3K after 200K.

Changing topics or going with the flow. I have 180,000+ on my 2000. Same as Ghost, I use my Dak like a truck. TRailers and boats, another 4X4 on a car trailer. It still halls A$$. Uses a little oil, think its all from a leak though(Spots on driveway). Brakes, I mean lots of brakes and tires is pretty much all I have had to replace besides the AC clutch 70,000 miles ago. Stock trans and gears. Rear needs to be gone threw. I have to say for a really hard 180 this motor rocks!
