Subject: Changing my oil for my first time
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I just got a 1997 Dakota CC 4x4 with a 5.2L V8. :D It was kind of a birthday present, but I paid for half. Anyways, I want to do oil changes myself, and not take them to some drive-thru place like Oil Changers. I've never done it before, but I think I should do well. Here's what I know so far:

1. Set the oil pan underneath the oil drain plug
2. Undo the plug, let the oil drain, put plug back on
3. Remove the oil filter, let oil drain out of there
4. Replace with new filter
5. Pour in new oil
6. Recycle used oil

That's what I know, but I have a few questions. How many quarts do those 5.2Ls take? Also, is replacing the oil filter difficult? Oh, and if I made a mistake in my steps or if there's something else I need to know, please correct me and fill me in! Thanks for the help in advance.

you've got all the steps right just a few things
warm it up slightly to let the oil flow eisier, if you don't let it warm up leave the oil to drain for a while. the other thing is your oil filter is on the passenger side. on my 93 my oil filter is loosened most eisily though the wheel well but i still have to take it out from the bottom. The 5.2 takes 6 quarts with filter. put about half a quart into the oil filter before you install it this will prevent oil starvation during start up.

Thanks, sounds good. It looks like I can get to the filter through the wheel well, also. But one question, how do I actually remove the filter? Do I just unscrew the whole thing by hand?

by hand or with an oil filter wrench. you can pick that up when you pick up the oil.

one thing to check when you get the filter off is make sure the rubber gasket comes off with the filter. sometimes they stick to the motor. then put a little oil on the gasket of the new filter, screw it on by hand.

i won't recommend a brand of oil or filter cause that could start a flame war on here. ask someone you know & trust about what brands they use.

if i may suggest, get a Haynes or Chilton service manual. it will come in handy down the road. a good investment at about 20 bucks.

Sounds simple enough, but don't hesitate to recommend brands to me. :p

For oil, I was going to go with Mobil1. As for the filter, maybe K&N.

nice choice

I gotta question relating to oil. I run pennzoil 10w30 but my buddy put mobil 1 fully synthetic in his and he said u could feel in the difference. is this true? and would it hurt my engine to switch over now? i got a 4.7 2004 43,000 miles i have had it since 16,000 always pennzoil. but i woulnt mind trying the fully sythentic mobil 1 if it works.

You can switch any time from reg. to synthetic.

I personally do like starting the engine to warm the oil - alot then gets hung up inside the engine.
So I do mine and just let it drain as long as it takes.
I also run 1/2 qt. low, but that is just me :)

Can you feel a difference with synthetic, probably quieter when you restart it - of course it usually is with just new regular oil too. HP difference - I doubt much if any.

Stop!!!!! I have a 2000 with the 4.7. you do not need to pay the price for mobil1 unless you can really afford ot or are just dead set on using it. I use the Castrol Syntec 5w10 blend with a Fram Duo-Guard filter. The oil is a synthetic/conventional blend and the filter has a Teflon additive. I had my timng chain replaced at 60,000 miles (due to my truck throwing the serpentine belt and somehow breaking my timing chain. Also bent a valve.....zero tolerance engine.) the tech who did it said he couldn't believe how clean the inside of my engine was. He told me has seen the inside of engines with a lot less mileage on them look a lot worse. Not to mention, I only change my oil about every 6 thousand miles. Hope this sets you in the right direction. Oh, yeah. Put a little bit of oil in the new filter before you install it as well. Good luck!!!!

like daddio said, the war just started. I don't think there is any "bad" oils out there, some are just better than others so use your own judgement.

The way I see it, if you can afford the synthetic, get it. It can't hurt.

It's kinda like a 9mm and .45acp.

The 9mm will do the job, but the .45 will make sure of it :D

BTW I use either mobil 1 or castrol syntec, whichever I can get cheaper (or whatever they have in stock at the time) in the 5qt jugs at the store :)

I do however keep a quart of valvoline synthetic, and a quart of walmart supertech conventional oil, in a trunk I have in the bed, just in case I randomly lose all my oil like one time earlier this year (I still don't know what happened...I was driving along, when the oil pressure gauge dropped and the check gauges light flashed and chimed. Drove a few more miles home, let it cool down (let the oil settle in the pan) and checked the stick...no oil on it...not good!!!)

Another slow day at your site ?
We were calling DodgeDakotas.com "DD.com" before your copycat site ever existed.
Seems that lately, most of the nonsense around here is yours...
