everything is stock on our truck. We want to give it duals out the back, I'm assuming we want cat back duals. We don't want the really loud exhaust that attracts the cops and pisses off the neighbors. We want just a nice sounding grumble when you step on it and maybe a little grumble at idle. What would you suggest? Are there kits that can be bought for the dual exhaust conversion? Do I leave the cat convertor alone?

GIBSON EXHAUST HAS A NICE KIT FOR CAT BACK I THINK THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. PLUS IT IS ALL STAINLESS STEAL WITH A LIFE TIME REPLACEMENT IF IT RUST THROUGHT OR CRACKS.

I'VE HAD MINE FOR 4 YEARS AND LOVE IT WITH NO PROBLEMS AND TOOK 1.5 HOURS TO INSTALL TAKING MY TIME.

Just have the 3rd cat cut out of the system, cost me $30.

A little louder, lower tone grumble, and not too loud.

I wouldn't mess with any of the cats.Unless you have a hook up for getting it inspected.
My 99 5.2 dosent have any cats,but I have a O2 simmulator,so my check engine light dosent come on,and i have a hook up.
Go to Flowmasters,Gibson, and Magnaflow's websites. They usually have sound clips of their systems on different trucks.

If you want to actually improve the performance, headers.
I installed a Flowmaster that gave me better performance and gas mileage, above 70 MPH. Great, except I'm rarely there.
Our engines live right around 2,000 RPM.
What I found DID make a marked improvement, is Gibson Headers. They claim they are tuned to perform where you drive.
Seems to be true. Got almost 2 MPG improvement, so they paid for themselves in gas savings, in a tad over a year.

Shatto,
Don't you have a v6?

Jason,
The 3rd cat has no sensors before or after it. NO O2 simm heeded, no codes or mil lights. It passes every time, no 'hookup' needed.

Shatto - the 4.7 is very a different design from your 3.9; with exhaust manifolds reputed to flow within 2% of headers. The major bottleneck in the 4.7 exhaust seems to be the y-pipe.

Gibson exhaust here too, but single sweptside.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Ah, the things to be learned here, at Dodge Dakotas.com, when the flamers aren't around.

Actually, Kowalski, the guy who installed the Flowmaster said I really didn't need split pipes for better performance because the exhaust on my truck was larger than necessary anyhow, thus confirming what you said, years before you said it.

I wonder how frustrated guys who like to modify are going to be with the new Toyota, that already has headers?

if i get one of those kits, do you have to weld the connections? Can just exhaust clamps be used?

I got the Gibson headers and single sweptside for torque.
I also believe very much in the positive interference of the headers , alone or as part of the project,as well as any other improvements, like TB, CAI, Tstat, cams, intake, no clutcth fun, etc.
For a engine that is called efficient,(every little thing helps. All of a suden you have 20 to 30 extra peak hp.
Also, these combinations made my truck go 3 miles longer on each gallon of nectar. I reach 19 to 20 mpg routinelly with such an ease that amazes my v6s friends.
It is a 2000 CC, 4.7, 2WD, 5 sp manual w/ 3.92 lsd.
P.S. My cat back Gibson lasted only 4 years, but this time i bought stainless, like the headers.
