Subject: Advice required: Exhaust sound level
IP: Logged

Message:
Due to the fact, that I cannot check different exhaust here in Switzerland, I need some advice.

Currently my 1999 R/T is equipped with Gibson Headers, a race cat and a Dynomax muffler followed by dual rear exit pipes. The sound is not bad but first way too loud at cruizing speeds (1000-1500 RPM) and second the interior sound level at 2000-2500 is almost unbearable.

What I am looking for is an exhaust (cat-back) that is not too noisy in the lower RPM range but very aggressive/sporty at WOT. Is there anything similar on the market? What are your experiences?

Thank you in advance,
Tim

My Gibson swept side cat back has a fairly decent tone that gets louder with more revs, but without being too annoying in the cab at lower revs. Some of them realy drone, don't they. I had another brand in a different truck I really didn't care for like you describe.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Took me a moment to recall the other brand - about ten years ago, I had a Borla with really annoying in cab resonance - might want to stay away from that brand.

I have a BORLA system on my '01 4.7 and think it sounds great outside the cab. Inside the cab has minimal resonance. The sound outside the cab sounds real tough, but not obnoxious. Has a real smooth sound through all of the RPM range. The sound of my blower is louder at times than my exhaust. If you can still by BORLA systems, I would do it to another truck without a doubt.

I've used a Flowmaster 70 Series muffler on both a '92 5.2, and my current '01 4.7. the tailpipes were custom bent, but Flowmaster may build a catback kit. This muffler was designed to give a performance sound out the pipe, but not make you endure interior resonance. Sort of cake-and-eat-it-too: performance/sound/nerves. One thing I really like is that the 4.7 sounds like it is 50 cubes larger.

Your problem is not the muffler set up that you are running as gibson mufflers are not that loud in most peoples oppinion. If you want to reduce your sound level you need to switch back to a stock cat.. The free flowing design of a hi-flo cat allows alot more flow which will create alot more resonance through the muffler which is why you have such loud noise levels in the cab. Switching to a multi-chambered flow master muffler like a 70 series like 01Motorsports said would prob. help but I dont think it would be a huge difference...

A Magnaflow 2 1/2"-into-3" y-pipe, and Carsound 3" hi-flow cat., leading into the Flow 70 on my Dak. It is slightly louder than stock, but the 70 still prevents interior resonance.

With all due respect I disagree on the cat causing the problem. If you was to check the exhaust pressure right in front of the stock cat you should not exceed 1.5 lbs of pressure. Unless someone proves different one day on a dyno test, I believe present day Race cats/high performance cats are nothing more then advertising hype to increase sales. A stock cat is very capable of flowing much more then it is required to. There are those that removed the cat entirely only to find no gains. By the way, the 1.5 lbs of back pressure is determined by exhaust size. If you start increasing back pressure, as you go beyond 1.5 lbs your valve life deteriorates much faster. Does gibson make different lengths of mufflers? The longer the muffler the more livable the sound.
Another thought. I read an artical in a magazine some time back That stated dodge Dakotas come stock with one of the best exhaust systems made. So it's hard to improve on that.

I agree. Todays cats are pretty free flowing. i've done a lot to my Dak including S.C. and still run the factory cats. I removed them a time ago to see about gains. Nothing but more noise. So they were put back on quickly.

OBIO3 mirrors my experience over more than 100,000 miles.
My Flowmaster gives me better power and miles per gallon.....at speeds I never drive.
Fact is; our vehicles run right around 2,000 RPM and a muffler designed to give better flow needs more flow than 2,000 RPM exhaust flow. So we get noise and little else.
I had to replace my catalytic converter so upgraded to a "high performance" model that did nothing to improve performance and ended up costing the same as a factory model that would have fit properly.
Why couldn't you install the stock muffler for a larger engine? Wouldn't it give better flow and be quiet?

Loud exhaust is produced via less baffles in the muffler or variances in the baffles that either cushion the pulses better or allow them to sneak by what ever amount the maker desires. Most quality muffler builders recommend thw size tail pipe you need from the muffler on back for the sound they intended you to have. Ever notice some get nice sounds and others are loud as H-ll or they resonate badly in the cab. You need to have a tuned exhaust To get a quality sound. The only people in here that can tell you what to use are those that got it right and have the same year and engine size as you.

@ all
Thanks a lot for your input. I will go for the Flowmaster Force II Cat-Back Exhaust System. It features a 3-chamber Flomaster muffler. Let see, if it will help.

Hey Tim

Please drop me a line per Email. I'm in Switzerland as well and got an 2002 Dakota R/T.
I used to live in Canada and need to get my truck to pass the Swiss Registration Process. Maybe you can give me some tips...it's always good to know some other swiss RT owners..

Hope to talk to you soon

Cheers

Stefan
