Subject: modded v6 vs swap for v8
IP: Logged

Message:
i see a lot of guys on here that have very heavily modded their v6's. also some folks who have swapped their v6 for a v8.

the question is, why spend so much modding a v6 when you can swap it for a v8? is a heavily modded v6 better somehow than say a lightly modded v8? is it a weight issue?
clue me in, i'm interested to know the reasons!

V6's are cheap to buy, feed, maintain, and insure. They respond to the mods the same way a V8 does. People who are building a pure race vehicel don't want a V6. But they can be fun to mod and drive. Why build a 4 cylinder Mustang SVO/ Because it's differant and fun.

The 3.9 is more expensive to beef up than 318s or 360s

they do respond better to certain mods like intake manifolds though..

On one hand it is ALWAYS cool to beat someone with less engine.

On the other, some people just like the V8 rumble that nothing else duplicates. Not a 4, a 6, or even a V10. It is just the best sounding, as far as exhaust sound goes.

Speaking of. Today I saw a fake dual, pea-shooter style exhaust on a new Colorado. It sounded funky as sheeet! Was probably a inline 5.

Anyway. Not to hi-jack too much. I think swapping to an 8 or building up the V6 depends on the person's own situation and what they want to achieve. Obviously building up a V6 to make some serious power takes more skill than swapping in another stock V8.

I think most do that just because it's what they already have in their truck; but want more power. Most will perceive it as easier to mod what they have, rather than swap engines; and/or may feel they'd lose money trading for a similar v8 truck, if they could find one.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

This is why I stretched to get a V8 in the first place. Only mods will eventually be exhaust and intake. Other than that, I could own the truck for ten years and there won't be a need to trade for more engine or tear into it to find more power. Not going all out when you buy it just means you'll spend even more later to make it the way you want it. Ton of people on here with small engined trucks who could have sank all that mod money into a V8 Dak. I don't get it.

Situations in which people get their vehicle. When I bought mine I had to get a different vehicle because the one I had was costing me too much money for what it was worth. I would have rather opted for the v8 but when it came down to it for my own personal situation and availability the v6 was the only one I could afford at the time. Also I wasn't really too concerned with just having the V6. Time goes on and now I'd rather have the V8. I'm not going to spend a ton of money on my V6 though because I figure it will be cheaper to rebuild a V8 or buy a long block and have it installed to get the power gains I would like.

Not to change the subject but my second vehicle was a 85 mustang svo.It strait rocked for a 4 banger.Would beat a 5.0 from stop light to stop light.Any farther then that the V8 would traump it.But yes very fun ride.

I'm with Eddy.

When we went looking at the deals at the Dodge dealer when we wenty to trade in for the Dakota most on the lot that were a QC were V6's. I was like "WTF is with all the V6 QC models"?

The wife would see one that was kinda neat, but I'd turn it down because it wasn't a V8.
After this went on for a while, she said "Does it HAVE to be a V8"? I said "YES" and eventually the one with a V8 and all the power stuff I wanted was also a 4X4 which I hadn't considered.
I wanted the best performance out of one of these trucks and knew the 4WD would kill some of it, but also know we like to go out in the boonies or into the snow so the 4X4 has been great for the most part.
