Subject: Superchips MPG improvement?
IP: Logged

Message:
I own a 5.2 liter 1999 Dakota with the 5 speed manual.

I've been pondering a Superchips programmer for a long time. I don't race my truck or anything, nor do I do any heavy towing.

The biggest reason I'd buy it would be for better gas mileage. But is it worth it? I know it would NOT be worth it on the super unleaded setting. Unless there was like a three or four MPG difference???

So, how much better was your gas mileage when using the Superchips programmer and on which setting did you see this difference or differences?

Thanks for the info.

You can pin down a specific gain because not all trucks are equal. You can take ten trucks and come up with ten different ignition and fuel timing variances. Some trucks may notice big changes in gas mileage and others with see little or not change. Depending on the price difference between regular and premium in your area just a one mpg increase can pay off. Here the difference is as little as ten cents per gallon or two dollars per tank full of gas. Virtually every vehicle benefits from an increase in timing advance and that is just one of the features you get from the superchips. How much you benefit depends more on you and your truck rather than the tuner itself.

I bought one for the same reason that you're thinking and was almost disappointed.

With the 87 octane setting, the Superchips did absolutely nothing for my truck.

I went to mid-grade (7 cents a gallon higher where I live), and mid-grade with the performance settings made all the difference in the world. I'm getting a consistent 17 to 18 MPG in town now, and 21-23 on the road. The only thing that I'd like to change is the speed at which lockup occurs, which isn't until about 53-54 MPH, whereas at stock settings it used to shift at about 47.

I had tried mid-grade by itself before purchasing the Superchips, and that alone helped. It won't cost you but a couple bucks to try mid-grade and see what it does for your truck.

02 SLT (auto), Fastman TB, Harland-Sharp 1.7's, Superchips, K&N drop-in, APP 3923's, brass cap and rotor, Amsoil.

What engine does your truck have? Is it four wheel drive or two wheel drive?

And what gas mileage were you getting before the superchips?

Sorry! Should have put that in - it's a 3.9 V6, 2WD. Mileage before was all over the place - as bad as 15 around town and 17-18 on the road. Mid-grade by itself helped quite a bit, particularly the road mileage. The Superchips helped the around town mileage more than the road mileage, and I believe primarily because it changed the shift points in the tranny. In town driving KILLS the mpg in these things, particularly if you have lots of non-synchronized traffic lights.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

I have started filling mine up with 89 octane to see if I can notice a difference.
