I just recently obtained a used 2000 3.9l Dodge Dakota Ext cab 4x4
and I'm looking to get most of the exhaust system redone. I'm
hopefully looking for some performance improvements as well as a
good sound to the truck. The sound I'm looking for is a nice, deep
rumble that is easily heard by people, but not loud enough to
annoy the neighbors. What combination of header, catback,
muffler, and pipe style would you guys recommend? Thanks for
your time :)

well i don't know a lot, but i have the same engine as you, i used a 40 series muffler and cut the secondary cat, just had inspection done and passed the emissions (live in NC) and im good. I cut the cat after i did the muffler and it gave it a much much MUCH deep tone....well i also cut the pipes short...about a foot and a half after the muffler cause it was first to be a dual exhaust set up...

But i talked to this one guy who has dak 3.9 and he cut his secondary cat, put his new muffler where the 2ndcat was and had the pipe exit before the rear tire... thats really all you need to give it a deep f###in aggressive as hell tone, but my guess is, if you work with other things such as the y pipe and headers youll prolly make it even more aggressive...good luck man

Ive gotten no complaints, just compliments, ive been runnin that system for about 6 months now.

I installed a Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 on my 3.9L 2.5in and duel 2.25out just in from of the rear wheel on passenger side. Sound has a deep rumble, but lost allot of low-end torque, very disappointed with the Flowmaster, would never buy one again. Will change sometime in the future. Installed Magnaflow on my R/T dak and 4.7L Durango, very impressed.

dynomax super turbo 3" catback, cheapest, easiest to install and best sounding. sounds just like a v-8 from idle to about 3k, then it just sounds like stock except a little louder. does not sound rice at all, if it did, i wouldve ripped it off.
