If both wheels spin then you have posi track if your rear end was open then just 1 wheel will spin.

In your glove box there is a tag that will tell you. Just because both wheels spin, does not mean you def. have limited slip.

Yup; and only GMs have posi - ours is called limited slip, or "sure grip" for the older mopars. An open rear can still spin both wheels in a low traction situation.

Don't do what Obio3 said. If you have a limited slip rear end, the wheel in the dirt will still spin and you will just wear out the clutches in the mechanism. Limited slip means just that, "limited". It will still slip, especially under that situation, only a locked rear end would do that.

ok well regaurdless of where im at or what im doin 2 spin but i dont get wheel hop when i make tight turns. and posi track was in mopars back in the day, when im in 4WD it hops on the inside wheel but not when im in 2wd, my friend said when i did a powerblock one went bout 1/2 turn then the other went, so i think is limi slip cause i thought posi was constantly locked

sure ways to know
-glove box if you still have the information taped down there
-jack the rear end up so the tires are off the ground and take the Parking brake off and if both tires spin in the same direction than it has a limited slip or Posi, if not than its an open diff.

you have an open diff from you description above.

03DakotaSXT - You are confused about "posi" being in Mopars "back in the day". Posi is a GM trademaked term; and was never put in a mopar. Mopar used the term "sure grip" for their limited slip rears. There were a couple different types, one was an Auburn type system - but both different from GM. One was clutch type, the other cone style.

Tool fan has described a good way to identify a limited slip rear with the tranny in neutral, spinning the rear tire by hand; if you haven't figured it out yet.

I have had many OPEN diffs spin both for a bit on even pavement. That can fool you sometimes.

Jacking it up is the best way. Although on my friend's CHEVY (with a mechanism) in nuetral and jacked up, it spins the other tire the OPPOSITE just as if it were open! But when he put one in the dirt and one in the pavement and hit it a little it DID grab the wheel on the pavement. Plus I SAW ther licking device when we took that apart, so i KNOW it wasn't open :p

On my Auburn, I can say it will spin in the same direction since it's cones or something with a spring pressing them together to resist the spiders from turning sperately.
Teh Auburn lets it slip enough to not wear your tires, etc too much. When I had synthetic in mine, it would chatter and not slip enough. When I turned corners slowly, it would make the tires squeel because it wasn't slipping enough...

Jack it up or remove the pan to have a look see. Nothing wrong with changing the fluid anyway :)

If limited slip can not slip on one side, what good is it. What happens the first time you get one tire on dry pavement and one on ice. this mean you replace the rear end constantly. Your sujesting the differential can not be allowed to do as it is designed to do. please explain how you do as you say and actually drive in adverce conditions.I'm always interested in learning new things I apparently don't know nothing about.

Obio3 - Just because both can spin in some situations (and GD is right, I've seen this myself) doesn't necessarily mean that it can't slip - you seem to be jumping to that conclusion. This doesn't mean it can't slip when it needs to. We're not suggesting an open rear can't slip - only that sometimes, both sides can spin !

Only if someone put a locker in it - most likely limited slip. An aftermarket locker will lock both wheels at the same rate; limited slip will power both but allow some slipping (helpful in turns); and an open rear puts most of the power to one wheel (whichever has the least traction, usually the right).
