I bought an APC steering wheel and GRANT doesn't make an adaptor for 98' Dodge Dakotas with air bags. I've seen other dakotas with aftermarket steering wheels. How do you do it? Where can I get an adaptor for it?

It's actually best to keep the stock wheel and airbag. Steering columns don't collapse like they used to in a wreck, so when the time comes (and you never know when), you'll be glad you kept that air bag.

A show vehicle may not apply, but if you use an aftermarket wheel, you may void your warranty or your insurance rates could suffer or your policy could even be cancelled. Your insurance company may not know about it but if you're in a serious accident and injuries are casued because of no airbag, believe me,your insurance company will find out and may deny your claim, or the claim of your heirs if you wind up with a steering column through your sternum.

Jesus Christ!!! Is this the aftermarket steering wheel inquisition forum? All I want is information on how to install it, that's all. I am aware of everything else.

I DO NOT drive this truck in the street. It doesn't have license plates, or vehicle insurance. It has a property insurance just in case in gets stolen.

So please, I understand your concerns but keep this forum only for ideas on how to change it

Thank you so much

Build your own. only need a small lathe. Got one and used to do this as part of building dunn buggies. You get a small lathe and you will never regret it being in the hobby you are. All it takes is a chunk of aircraft alluminium.

So many problems .... So little time

OK Lou. Here's one way.
1. Rip that nice, safe, padded, Gov't and DOT approved, airbag-holding steering wheel off its mounting. This will require the use of a couple different size torx drivers, and a bigdamn pipe wrench for the honkin nut in the center. Whatever you do, DO NOT set it down in any position except one that has the airbag facing up. If that SOB goes off when the bag is pointing down, you might get kilt by the flying nice, padded (etc) steering wheel. Then you will never get to point yer Dakota in the direction of yer choice with that new one.
2. Get the new steering wheel and hold it in place exactly where you want it. Might have to tackweld it to keep it from slippin.
3. Drill a metric buttload o'holes through the center of the wheel and into the steering column. Any place there's room for a hole is good, but be mindful of wires, switches, modules and such in there. About 5 or 6" deep ought ta do it, but deeper is always better (or so the wife says). WATCH OUT! Over on the left side of the column is the blinker fluid reservoir. Do not drill any holes in it or yer blinkers will quit workin.
4. Lag screw that bad boy down. Maybe not too far down, cause then it might be hard to steer. And then you might run into something, at which time you will wish you had that nice, safe, padded....
