Does anyone have any info on the J&S Safeguard
knock controller Part # 22004 V0 no boost.I'd like
to use it on my 93 5.2 with a Mopar porformance PCM. Also like to use it all the time, including while towing.Plan to use 89 octane when Towing and
87 octane around town.Hughes Engines sells them.
Please input info good or bad.Since this is the best Dakota site I've been able to find.I decided to join all you nice folks.

Why are you bothering with the mopar PCM ? It will add more spark advance; then the knock controller will sense knock if you're not running good enough gas, and take that spark advance back out again. A lot of expense just to end up back where you started. If you want the benefits of the mopar PCM, you need to run good enough fuel to take advantage of it. Rather than the mopar PCM, I went with a custom flash (there is no mopar PCM for my aplication). I just have to run premium when towing, so I plan for that. The 5.2 may require better fuel for regular use though; and you'd have to try it to see if you could tow with that PCM - my 4.7 is less prone to knock. You could always swap back to your stock PCM for towing.

Kowalski,
The J&S Knock Controller does not pull all the advance timing out on all the cylinders at the same time only the knocking/pinging cylinders are retarded.J&S says only 1 or 2 cylinders knock the rest of them can run with the performance timing
Also I have a performance PCM that I bought new in 93 I don't care to be always changeing out the PCM.I towed with it a couple of times using 89 octane and it really improved the power I didn't have any pinging I don't think as my high frequency hearing is not good. Additional the J&S doesn't pull all the advance out at one time, It can be set to pull 1,2,or 4 degrees every complete power rotation. Thanks for answering my post

Interesting, I see why you're looking for firsthand info on it. At first, that seems to go against the school of thought of making everything the same for best performance; such as ccing a head so all the combustion chambers are the same and each piston pulls evenly. Perhaps it is actually taking advantage of those disparities in a stock engine; and that's why it only has to control some cylinders ? Good luck, sounds like you've got a nice truck there. Please let us know how it works out if you try it.

I see this a bit differant. If the knock is being caused by a hot spot in one or 2 cylenders I can see a possible advantage to the J&S. But if it is a plenum/vacumn leak problem your going to be shuting down every cylender constantly/erradicaly and seems to me this will kill HP like crazy not to mention fuel milage. My opinion...... Be sure what's causing the knocking before you spend the bucks.

So many probems .... so little time

The point of the knock controller is not to cure knocking, its to save your engine should the knock start to occur. Obviously, the ideal setup would be set up so that knock does not occur. The controler is there so something changes, i.e. cant get correct grade of gas, you won't kill the engine.

An engine with boost is a good example. As you add boost, you usually need to pull timing relative to the boost level. If you pull 1 degree / psi and get knock in any cylider, you would move to 2 degrees / psi. This would decrease power. With the knock controller, you would be able to still run the 1 degree / psi, and the safeguard would pull that extra 1 degree out of the cylider that was knocking.

7 cyliders @ -1 degree and 1 @ -2 is alot better than all 8 at -2.

Crow 318 & Obie3,
Obie I have the Hughes Stage 1 modified intake,
it comes with the 1/4 inch aluminum cover that is
supposed to take care of the intake plenum leaks.
I installed the intake and don't have any leaks.
Crow 318 I believe you see it as I do.Although I was hoping I could hear from someone with a J&S
installed. I have received mine from J&S but haven't had time to install it yet. Will post my
takes on it after the install and after I tow my
4500# HiLO trailer with it installed. This may be some time from now, as they say it takes about 400 miles for the computer to adjust to all the mods.I don't drive the truck much unless I'm tow-
ing.
