Message:
I'm planning on rebuilding my 1991 Dakota reg cab short box 2wd with the 318 L.A engine. I plan on adding a new cam, intake mainfold, and headers. I've already decided on the intake manifold and headers, but which cam will give me the most power for my buck? I already have free flow exhaust.

look up the guys @ KRC or hughes engines. they can steer you in the right direction. it's all going to depend on what you want to do with your truck. since you've already picked out a manifold you'll want the cam to compliment it along with any head work you choose to do or not do. they all have to work together to get the best performance and bang for the buck.

Considering the smaller ports on the 318LA, good power and flexibility will come from a 110 degree lobe seperation, mild duration (around 210-215 degress net @ .050, with gross valve lift under .450 inches. Many years ago, I used the CompCams High Energy 260 in my 318-powered '69 Charger with very good results (pulled like crazy, shifted at 5,800rpm, and was hooked to a 727 tranny with 2.76 gears). Something like that in the Xtreme Energy line would work even better. You should be able to find a roller cam (or have one ground) with similar specs.

Looks like CC now has rollers for the LA. The HR254 would be a good one.
