Subject: engine light on after oil change

Message:
we purchased a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup & put over 3000 miles on it on a road trip for 3 weeks...it only had 10,400 on it when we bought it about 2 months ago...but after my husband changed the oil, the check engine light is on...is there a special tool to get it off or something to do so we can continue to change our own oil? thanks much

Do this without starting the engine...

turn the key on-off-on-off-on, leave it there. The odometer will display the code(s) that have tripped the MIL. It will show "p done" after the last code.

Go to www.obdii.com and lookup the code(s). This will tell you what is the problem source. It may be entirely coincidental with the oil change event, because the PCM doesn't monitor anything related to the oil that would trip a code.

Post the code(s) here and I'm sure you'll get good advice on how to resolve it.

What's your left foot doing?

You did check your dipstick didn't you? I got my oil changed once in my S-15 and some nimrod forgot to put the oil in. I didn't check it myself because it was a reputable place. Well, engine was ruined. So if your oil light comes on make sure they put the oil in. LOL

check and make sure your gas cap is tight. if its not and its easy to not tighten it all the way, the check engine light will come on. the light will take awhile to turn off when you correct the problem, it will take about 10minutes with the engine running for the PCM to clear the code.

Janet,

This would not trip a mil light, but did your husband know that the 4.7 engine takes 6 quarts of oil?

I realize you didn't state which engine you have, but check into it.

The advice given is all good. Sometimes, you even have to replace the gas cap, to get the light to quit coming on.

I agree with TT, I don't know if it is a manufacturing error, but a lot of dipsticks on the 4.7L don't seem to read right. Mine, for example shows full at 5.5qts. I put 6qts in anyways because that is what the mfg says to do. Should I need to get my oil change at a lube place (for some odd-ball reason), I always trail their work and make sure they put in a full 6 qts.

ed, take your impala to your local Auto Zone and have them read the codes for you. it's free. the key on/off 3 times is a DC thing NOT GM.
