Subject: 5-Speed Shifter Questions!

Message:
Alright, I've got several people telling me one thing, and a manufacturer telling me another. I need input!

Have:
2000 Dakota Regular Cab 2x4
Low-Gear Rear Axle (I don't recall which ratio)
V6 3.9L w/Airaid intake
5-Speed Manual Tranny.

Want:
Shorter-throw shifter

Told:
I've been told by people that the 2000 V6 is mated to the same NV-3500 on the V8s.

Hurst Says:
"We only have a shifter for the V6 Dakotas with the AX-15. We have not tried the V8 shifter on the V6 truck yet. It probably won't work, there
are a number of different NV3500's."

Need to know:
Whats the scoop? Has ANYONE tried the Hurst Compitition Plus shifter on the V6 5-speed yet? If not, I'd like to hear from people with 2000 Dakota 5-speeds using ANY type of shifter/mod to get a shorter throw. 8 inches is a tad much.

Chuck installed one on his truck it's a V6 5 speed. www.intense99dak.com/index.htm

I wouldn't mind getting a short-throw shifter on my truck too, because like you said Todd 8" is a tad much. Would a short-throw smooth out the shift too? I've notice that the shifts are alittle notchy.

Anthony,

Yeah, I saw that one. 4" would be MUCH better, eh? He says it didn't help with the notchyness, although I'm not bothered by it. It feels "truckish" to me, and a LOT more solid-shifting than the S-10 I test drove. I'm just a little worried that that shifter is only rated to '99, and I've already discovered differences between the '99 and '00 model years. Mostly electrical so far, but I'm sure it's more pronounced than that.

$182 is a bit much to spend, I think, on something that MAY not fit... but if it does, I'll buy it in a second! Maybe I'll Email Hurst on that one...

I think it was on Jegs.com... I think... one of those online places like that. I had to do a search by model number.

Okay here is my experience on this: I have a 2000 4x2 3.9v6 with the 5-speed, I called the dealer and was told by the parts department that the v-8 and v-6 mated to the nv3500 trans show the same shifter part number if you order the stock shifter, and since you are only replacing that with the hurst and nothing else internal, there is no reason that it shouldn't fit, after all the v-6 is just a shorter block that bolts up to the tranny the same way, just 2 less cylinders in the casting. I plan to take my chances and order the hurst as soon as I can afford it.

5-Speed Shifter Questions Answered!

ok - here is what i know (and ive installed a Hurst shifter on my 97 v6 Dakota):

there is a Billet Plus shifter for the AX-15 transmission (part number 391-5050, i bought at summitracing and it took a month to get), and there is a Competition Plus shifter for the v8 engine (dont know the transmission number, because - well, i dont have one)....so, there you have it....

notchiness is STILL there (thats what i was hoping to alleviate)....

still nice to have a chrome stick and a white shift knob (extra 30 bucks!)....i have the camel and black interior and it looks great....

4 bolts hold the shifter in place, and it took me maybe 1.5 hours to install it....piece o cake....

Yeah, the 3.9L is basically the.. uh.. 5.2L? With two cylinders lopped off. From what it looks like to me, it's the same tranny as the NV3500 V-8 (same bolt pattern), so yes it should fit. I was really looking for confirmation that they had switched to the NV3500 in 2000, from the AX15. Since the shifter for the V-6 and V-8 has the same Dodge part number, that lends to that theory. Looks like I know what I'll be ordering next! Thank you, everyone, for your help.

I have a '01 RC 4.7 5spd. I checked into getting a hurst comp/plus short throw shifter but was told by their techs in a email that it wouldnt fit the '01's and that they were in the process or developing one. Hursts website however, says the shifter will fit 1994-2000 Dodge Dakota V8's with NV3500 transmission.

If anyone is successful w/ getting and installing a Hurst shifter on a NV 3500, please let us all know.

I purchased one last year for my 98 Dak. 5.2, after being told by Hurst that it would fit, only to find out it was for the V6 only. Thankfully the parts dealer let me return it for full credit.

They do seem to have a new shifter (Part No. 391-0155) that they are advertising on their web site for the NV 3500.

Also one was sold on eBay the last couple of days for about $160.

Let us know.

According to the FSM both the V6 & V8 use the NV3500 tranny the 4 holer uses the NV1500.
I was told the same thing by Hurst about a week
ago.
I also tried to get the new FIPK from K&N for the
"00"&"01 5.9l engines in DAK & DURANGO but they
said it wouldn't fit because of engine bay differences (what differences?)they also said it was a pollution issue(HUH?)

just out of curiosity... why not just cut about 4" off of the shift lever and then use a tap and die to rethread the lever? that sounds to me like it would work and be a lot cheaper. any thoughts??

How much does the hurst shifter really shorten the throw, I have read that it is a mear 4" from first to second, well yesterday I went to my dak with a ruler and measured my thorw from first to second and it came in at an huge stroke of 5", really is it worth the $300 to get the hurst. For only 1" difference I think NOT. I am in canada that is why $300.
