Subject: Ticking from a 318
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm getting a ticking noise coming from the engine at idle, could this be a broken rocker arm or a broken valve spring. It does speed up with the engine, but I can't hear it after 2500-3000 rpms.....maybe because of engine noise.
Please don't tell me that it's a piston ring.
Any ideas?

It's a 99' 4x4 318 stock engine with 156000kms

If your running Premium Gas with a stock setup it will do this. When I first bought my truck I thought premium would be better but its designed for 87 octane. Or if its a quite ticking, it might just be the PCV valve working properly.

Could be a spark plug wire - open the hood in the dark and look near the tick sound. You sould see a small flash if a wire is arcing.

like obio3 and chris said, its an exhaust leak. try tighening the headers first, if that doesnt work, new header gaskets.

i started my truck up after it had sat for almost 3 weeks. it had a hard time starting and after that it made a ticking noise once running. i thought it was because there was no oil on the top end or because the lifters had to pump up. it sound kinda like a lifter tick, but i also thought that it could be from the fuel injectors.

is that possible, that it could come from the fuel injectors or do you also think it was the lifters or something else, maybe? it stop making the noise with in 5 minutes of running & no longer makes the noise.

it could be simple like a bad lifter or a stretched timing chain (causing the timing to be off a little and making it ping) or a wrist pin slapping.these are all worst case. check the most abvious before tearing down the engine. i just did a jeep 4.0 that had a tick and it turned out to be a wrist pin on #2 piston, it happens when oil is not change on time and especially with alot of miles on it..

I don't think it would be bad oil cause I change it 2-3 times per year, It has yet to stop ticking so i'm leaning away from low oil. I'm going to get my mechanic to look at it this week and see what he says, I'll let every one know and will reply after my appointment.
Thanx to you all
I'll be back soon

The problem/fix could be a number of different things, as suggested in this thread; and may not be the same for everyone. Yours sounds like it might be going away as a hydralic lifter pumps up.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

TOOLFAN>>>>>>>>> You need to buy better oil filters. Your oil drained down an it clattered untill it Pumped back up and restored oil pressure. Fram isn't the only filter name that ;s bad. Fram makes a lot of fiters for others.

For the rest of you......... If your exhaust isn't leaking then try this. If you can only hear the ticking while sitting in the drivers seat and only at idle and a bit above, it will be your purge valve. On the 99. it is mounted on the firewall just above the valve cover, drivers side. It is considered NOT defective to do this and cost about 50 bucks for a new one. You have about a 50/50 chance it will be quiet, at least for a while. I found that putting a glue backed rubber strip or a velcro half between it and the firewall stops the noise for good. I'll send you a bill for this one lol lol. Newer Dakotas put the purge valve behind the battery . You as the driver can not hear it there.

So many problems .... So little time
