Quick question for someone in the know. I'm not making full boost off idle like i used too. I thought belt slippage. Replaced belt and tensioner and still same problem. Now i'm thinking manifold leak or the "boost bypass valve" not fully closing. What would you recommend??

To check the bypass, just unhook the vacuum line and take a look to see if its closed.

If you have a manifold leak, it will be noticable both at idle and under boost.

Where are you reading boost? It could be as simple as a plugged vacuum line.

I am going to check all the vacumm lines running off the blower to make sure there is no leaks and or clogs. The bypass valve is always closed until it sees engine vacum and then it opens(as soon as i start it). As i put throttle into it it slowly closes until i put it too WOT then it shuts completely and allows all the boost to get at the motor. As for the intake leak it would not necessarly cause a poor running motor because Kenne bell has the map sensor in a seperate place than stock. It's no longer on the manifold. They add a MAF sensor to read air for the blower and only rely on MAP while idling. I beleive the MAP is then reading the vacuum the charger is producing "above" the manifold. All my old vaacuum lines (brake boost vents ect.) all run off a plate right behind my throttle body. I can't really check the bypass sytem unless I have it on a dyno where i can put it to WOT and look at the thing at the same time. Too scared to just jack up the back tires. I'm going to try propane around the manifold and all lines as well. It could just be a bad reading at the guage so i will take off the line and test the guage to make sure its working properly, I used the line that runs to the "piggy back" for my source. Do you think this sounds right??

I am not sure what the "piggy back" is. The setup that I have uses a port on the side of the manifold. A short soft line runs into a small aluminum vacuum manifold that has 3 ports. One for the bypass, FMU, and gauge. I would imagine your setup is similar.

Anyways. When you test the gauge, use the same method to test the bypass valve. If the bypass is completely closed when the truck is off, if you get boost, it should still be closed. If it stays open, that means it is still reading vacuum some how.

Also, what kind of loss are you talking? No supercharger I know of makes "full" boost right off idle.

Anyways, good call on not using jack stands. I wouldn't either.

Propane is a good test for the leak.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Piggy back is the FMU. YOur setup does sound a lot like mine but i really have no manifold to speak of. The SC replaced the top manifold(plastic beer barrel type). I only have that small aluminum block with the MAP on it which is where the vac line goes to the FMU, bypass and my gauge, rest of the lines are right behind the throttle body. Any who, have not had a chance to mess with it yet but i will get to it. BTW, when the truck shift I'm getting a sort of "woof" sound which someone told me could be me hearing a manifold leak. As for lose of boost it's about 1 to 1.5 pounds depending on RPM. It does eventuallly hit the full 6 but not till almost 5000rpm. I know when i used to hit it it would hit 6 right away! The kenne bell usded to give me a full 6psi right at 2000rpm. It's just getting to spring where I'm at and i baby the thing in the winter, for the little i do drive it. So i really don't know how long I've had this issue, but i know something has changed.

One more quicky. I still have not had a chance to give it a good look over but lets say it is the manifold gasket. Pretty sure they are just large rubber rings right?? Is there anyone making anything after market that will hold up better with forced induction??

The ones on mine were the standard intake gasket, 1 piece per side. Stock ones should be fine for your application.

Then there is the belly pan gasket. That is a 1 piece gasket that looks similar to, we'll say, a water pump gasket, but is rectangular.

Those are prone to leaking. http://www.hughesengines.com/partDetail.asp?partID=11698&eTypeID=10
That will take care of that problem.

Thank you sir. IF i do end up doing the gaskets I'm going to do both while I'm in there. I'll let ya know how it goes. thanks again.

Made an appointment with the dyno. My dash was in and out this winter for a heater core and i think he may have crimped the line running to my boost/vac gauge. I'm going to hook one up right where i tee'd off and see what it does while runing on the dyno.

I was lucky. only a broken "t" in the vacumn line. Sweet!!!! I made an extra 20 hrs with the governor off. The truck used to shut down around 41-4200 rpm. I ran her up to 5000 this time. I don't think i would make much more after that ie 5500rpm? Was hoping for 300hrs and i got 292.

Good deal.

I ran 282 RWHP. But I was more impressed with the 350 torque. The worst part is, I wasted money on a dyno run with a bad torque converter. They dyno figured my drivetrain loss at 28%

YOu have the 5.2?? I only hit 315 for torque with my 4.7. I"m thinking i may do some head work instead of adding more boost and water/alky. Right in the middle af my bathroom renovation right now, it's probably not going to be till next year now. Had a few surprises when i opened her up. I guess that's what you get with an ninety year old house.

Yeah, I have the 5.2. Its a great engine. I know they changed size becuase of emmisions regulations and what not. Some people say that the 5.2 was at the end of its upgradability as far as a manufacturer standpoint.

If you ask me, there is no better engine than a small block mopar.
