www.kgo810.com. go to personalities; Bill Wattenburg.
Bill is an engineer who was with Lawrence Livermore Lab, and he says do what he does with his big Mercedes, use the cheapest gas you can. If it pings go up a notch. He says Premium only matters under high power situations which the car rarely uses.
Don't know about big time V8's, but the timing on my 3.9 is done by the computer. Messing with the distributor only changes the injection timing.

If it were possible, you could advance your timing safely by one degree for each 1000 feet of elevation your driving at. Should you drive to lower elevation, at some point it will knock requiring you to retard timing or run High octane fuel. Far as fuel goes, run the cheepest fuel it will run on with no knocking. If it will handle regular so be it and your engine will love you for it.

So many problems .... So little time

I got the impression from reading that higher octane is 'worse' for the engine. Does that make sense? Or are you guys simply saying it isn't required per code of service manuals? I tried the link on Shattos post. No lucky.

Matt,
Google www.kgo 810.com.
Google Bill Wattenberg

Octane merely makes the gas burn slower. Has to do with compression; the higher the compression the more it wants to act like a Diesel, which ignites the fuel with the compressed hot air.
By worse; it won't damage the engine but you'll spend more for something that doesn't improve performance.
If an engine is rated for 'Premium' it will ping, under load, if you don't use Premium. However, if you don't drive there, why spend the money. Won't hurt to try.
