Im going to go out and buy the Magnaflow catback exhaust kit for my 05 Dakota 4.7 4x2 Quad Cab. Part# 16621 (its the single in single out, side exit)

I am also thinking of buying the JBA headers at the same time for my truck, now my question. Is there any performance gain in purchasing these headers or do they just look nice? If its only going to give me 1-2 HP then im probably not going to buy them. But if I get close to 10hp and some better fuel mileage, then its probably worth it.

Also, I am a canadian eh. Any suggestions where I should purchase this stuff online?

I got a quote from a local shop, $544.00 canadian for the exhaust and $694 for the headers.

Best price ive found so far online for the exhaust is $473 US at HotExhaust.com

My 98 3.9 (that's almost a 4.7, isn't it?) has Gibson Headers. I installed them a long time after the Flowmaster.
The muffler gave me the same MPG at about 10MPH greater speed. No difference at low speed.
The headers made a huge change; scary acceleration (for a V6, anyway), better power around 2,000 RPM where the engine lives, and a couple miles better gas mileage.
www.gibsonperformance.com.
They say they engineer them for the way you drive, not the racetrack.

Im assuming the JBA headers are equal to the Gibsons, I got the quote on the JBA because they seem to be more popular. From your post it sounds like its worth the investment.

I dont plan on taking it to the race track.. im guessing my times would be high 15's to low 16's if I did.

I put a Magnaflow (not sure of part #) single in dual out (exiting right behind the rear wheels) on my '01 QC a was very happy with it! Sounded awesome, seemed to pick up some power, got lots of compliments on the way it sounded, but it was still mellow at highway speeds. I never had headers though. I had the system on the Dak for over three years with no problems. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

If your looking for extra power the headers may help but the catback is not going too. Your going to want to change out the Y-pipe, prety much obvious if your puting on headers. I'm a fellow Canuk, where are you at?? Southern Ontario here. The Magnaflow Catback does sound nice, i was happy wiht mine.

Thanks for all the feedback, still trying to decide on the headers. Might be some issues with voiding my factory warantee there.

If I did go with the headers I was going to leave the factory Y pipe. Nobody has an aftermarket Y pipe available for the 05/06 Dakotas yet. I could fabricate one & cut the cats off the old y pipe. I dont want to go dual, heard you loose torque and make alot of noise.

Im located in southern Ontario also, just outside of the Windsor area.

If that's the case with the Y-pipe and not wanting to go true duels than I would stick with just the Catback. All your going to get is the sweet sound, not much for performance. I go to the strip up in Grand Bend throughout the summer, I'm in Kitchener. It can sure be a pain in the a$$ to get some parts up here. I paid some serious duty when i ordered my kenne bell SCer and there just aren't that many distributors !!!! It is getting better, and with the dollar as strong as it is, that helps out a bit as well.!!

I've changed the exhaust on my '01 4.7 past the manifolds. The factory manifolds were designed to flow within 2 percent of headers. If you have major mods so that the engine is near 300HP, that's a different story. I replaced the factory 2" pipes between the manifols and the Y-pipe with 2 1/2", relaced the factory Y-pipe with its 1 1/2" necks with a mandrel-bent Magnaflow 2 1/2" dual-into-3" Y-pipe, replaced the factory 2 1/2" cat. converter with a Carsound (Magnaflow) 3", then a Flowmaster 70 followed by 2 1/4" duals with 3" tips. The 3" cat and Y-pipe produced a 1 mpg gain overall last year; the catback changes were made 2 years earlier. Air intake and HOcams mods help on the induction side.

I crawled under the truck and took a closer look at that stock Y pipe, Im not sure what dodge was thinking.

Even if I only go with the catback (which I think I am, no headers) im going to cut out that Y pipe and place an aftermarket one on there. Im going to leave the rest of the pipe that is between the manifold and the Y pipe, mainly because this includes the cats. and the O2 sensors.

You've heard from others that the catback is not going to do anything worthwhile on the horsey side. If that's the case then with the catback all you are getting a sound change. Why not save some money and just drop a new muffler in and be done with it?

The plumbing after the cat is not much of a restriction. If you're not going to rework from the manifolds to the cat itself, with duals or an opened up single (like 01Motor...), then save some $$$

The Magnaflow catback with dual exits sounds so sweet though! The sound and rumble it gave my Dak was worth the $$$ to me even if it didn't improve my performance a whole lot. I got so many compliments on the sound of my Magnaflow! Just my .02 cents.

I understand im not going to gain much in HP. They want over $200 here for the magnaflow muffler. I dont want something that is too loud, so im staying away from the flowmaster, which I can get much cheaper.

If I just replaced the muffler, im going to want to remove the resonators anyways right? So there is alot of cutting of the existing exhaust. I figured i would just replace the whole thing with the stainless exhaust that should last me a long time.

With the link anthony gave I can get the catback kit for $430 canadian.

BTW, guys here's a video of my Magnaflow exhaust on my 4.7. It's not too bad of a clip, it sounds alot deeper and louder in person. I can easily set off car alarms. And this is with the 18" magnaflow muffler.

Hey Lawrence, I'm from Belle River. If you want come and have a listen to my R/T. It has the PPH headers, 3" magnaflow cat, 3" midpipe, Dynomax ultraflow-race muffler, and stock 3" tailpipe. I've never gotten anything but good comments on the sound. If you see my truck around it's the only Amber-fire (Burnt orange) regular cab R/T in Essex county.

Lawrence, not all Flowmasters are loud.I just installed the Flowmaster # FLO-17414 from Summit Racing $252.00 US 2 weeks ago on my 05 Dakota.Nice low rumble at idle and not loud at all when driving.Only took an hour to swap out.No cutting involved.Front resonator stays on.Only muffler and rear resonator come off.New parts clamp right on with no leaks. This is a 50 Series SUV muffler. No drone at all from this muffler.

Blanche, would you happen to have any sound clips? I had listened to the 50 series flowmaster and they sound good, thought the magnaflow sounded just a little better.. my opinion.

I was leaning towards a stainless catback because of the salty roads around here in the winter time... if I dont get stainless its not going to last long.

The more I get responses im thinking I should just replace my muffler with the magnaflow and skip the catback kit all together. How do you think it would sound if I left both resonators in place?

If you want to keep a single pipe just keep the stock pipes. Get a Magnaflow 14" which is louder than the 18". If it's not loud enough with both resonators, remove the tail end one. Then for sure you'll be very happy with the sound!! It wont cost much to do.

Im not really looking for the exhaust to be too loud, I just want that deep rumble sound, do you know what the size of the muffler is that comes in the magnaflow catback kit?

I was either going to go for the 18" 5x8 oval or the 22" 5x11 oval.

I also really like the stainless tips you have on your Dakota (Anthony), ill put one of those on there too.

Kinda off topic, but I just did the TPS mod today. Took it for a little drive, I notice the trasmission is much more responsive to my foot. Downshifts are much quicker. I dont have to mash it to the floor and cross my fingers.

Stock I had a reading of .50 from the TPS, after drilling out the inserts and mounting the sensor I was able to get .725v

The Magnaflow cat-back kits come with a 18" 5x8 oval muffler, that's what I have on my dak. As for the tips go with a 3.5" tip it will add in a deeper sound.
