What exactly do 4.10 gears do? and why are they better than going down in numbers? is it the difference between gaining torque and HP?

Think of gears like a lever. The longer the lever, the greater the torque application. "Give me a long enough lever, and I can move the world."

Higher numerical numbers are equivalent to a longer lever. The higher the number, the more torque gets applied to the road. Important for towing and hauling.

There's always a down side; no such thing as a free lunch. Think of a long lever to lift a heavy load. It takes less effort, but you have to move the end of the lever a lot further to accomplish the same task. With higher numbered gears, the engine has to turn higher rpm's to attain the same speed. That means a lower top speed, and more fuel burned.

Life's full or trade offs.

Then get 2.73`s. "Speed" is a relative term. Do you mean you want to "accellerate" quicker? Then get 4.56`s.

oh yes...i dont want a higher top speed...i want better acceleration...so 4.10's or higher is good for acceleration..but its rev's more and causes bad mileage....correct?

Correct, although 4.10`s won`t kill your gas mileage. Some Polish guy here even reported a little better with 4.10`s. If you do a lot of around town/stop and go it might go up some(if you drive normal).

If you want speed, Torque is what gets you there fast.

Look at it this way, HP determines how fast you go, TQ gets you there.

More HP = higher top speed
More TQ = quicker acceleration

What's your left foot doing?

Several of us have seen a slight mpg increase with 4.10's; all with the 4.7 engine. I don't see much stop and go driving though; mostly go !
4.7/4.10 is a great combination.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Screw all that crap and go straight to the gears, they will by far give you the largest gains!!! And if you don't already have the LSD spend the extra money and get it all done at the same time.

All i'm saying is that your not going to get much if any performance out of those mods. And if its performance you want why waste money on mods that are only going to sound good?? Before i got my SCer i had the jet chip, airraid intake and cat back magnaflow. I got exactly 6 rear wheel horsepower with all those mods, if i were to do it again i would not waste my money. I'd go with gears and a shot of nitrous. I also saw an increase in gas milage with my 4.10's but witha blower running premium gas I'm pretty much screwed for milage, but hell, it's only gas and you gota pay to play.
