Subject: 7.25 axle to 8.25 swap
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know for sure if the 8.25 axle will bolt in directly inplace of the 7.25, or what is required to make the swap?? I have a Cummins 3.9 4cyl turbo diesel mated to the 3500 tranny. so far all is well except I broke the stock 7.25 and the one I got from the junkyard. I want to upgrade to something a little stronger and uses the factory lug pattern.
Thanks for any help.

stock rear end is 8.25 your thinking of 9.75 replace it with that. and it should bolt right up if it's off a a dakota but a ram one might fit, not sure though

7.25 rear end was stock with 4 cyl. I replaced one in a '94. 8.25 bolted right in, but you need to have the driveshaft shortened, or have a new one made.

My swap is complete. Had to shorten the driveshaft, also the u-joints are different so while at the shop I had the new end put on the driveshaft. I now use 2 different part number u-joints. Also the u-joint straps were slightly different, but easily modified to work. all in all an easy swap for the added strength.

Still going strong, I recomend this swap if you still have the 7.25. I have abused it pretty hard and have had no problems.

Which rear end and gears did you use? LSD (Limited Slip Diff) - yes? no? What are the HP and TQ numbers of that engine? What is your fuel economy?

Do you have any specifics about the conversion you'd like to pass along? I'm sure there are others that would welcome the knowledge. It sounds like a fantastic success story.

What's your left foot doing?

Right now it is still open carrier with 3.55 gears. Hopefully will soon change to 3.21 or so. Getting 22 mpg most of the time. Plan to intercool it when I change the gears. Should hopefully get it to around 26 or so. BTW the 22 mpg is even towing my 3500lb boat.

I am doin the same, but I come across a 8.25 out of a 99' model R/T with a limited slip for $150. I had to shorten both axle tubes 1 5/8 in. and relocate the leaf spring perches and shock mounting brackets. I am having some axles made which was the expensive part($350) and I am goin to have to shorten the drive shaft and change the rear u-joint. It was a good bit of work but i think it will be worth it.

user101 - are you sure that R/T didn't have the 9.25 rear, with the octagonal cover ?

To user101. My truck is a 91, and it did not require any thing but driveshaft mods. Im not sure why yours is so hard. Im not up on the newer models. Good luck to you though.

That seems rather odd, that an R/T wouldn't have the heavier duty 9.25 that it should have come with. The older generation explains why you had to shorten the axle tubes, that's doing it the hard way !
