Subject: edelbrock heads etc..

Message:
i was thinking of buying edelbrock heads 2.02 aluminum, stiffer valve springs, 1.7 rollor rockers, mopar valve covers, & harden pushrods for $1500. these heads were on a 360 for less than 2k miles with no over heat.

was going to bolt this to my 318.
my truck has over 150k miles but runs great with little to no oil burn, but i was wondering if theses heads are a bad idea?

They're not bad heads if you have a cam, M1 intake mainfold, throttle body, headers and a stall converter to compliment them. Otherwise all you're doing is reducing the gross weight of your truck.

If everything else is stock, it's probably a waste of money. You'll get some improvement, of course. But not $1500 worth. Too much head for a stock motor.

2.02/1.60 valves are way too big for your 5.2l motor, unless your racing it on a regular basis.

Stiffer valves springs are also a bad idea on an otherwise stock motor. Too much valve train friction.

OTOH, if you have an M1 or similar intake, headers, dual exhaust, low gears, and you race it, buy these heads quick before somone else does.

2.02's can really hurt your bottom end, especially on an otherwise unmodified 318 or daily driver - you will need other mods + high-stall torque converter or gears to balance everything out.

150k on the rest of the motor might be bad because other items such as pistons/rings/etc. are already at/near the end of their natural life and adding that much horsepower will likely make those parts fail - expect a rebuild relatively soon after installing these parts.

Otherwise it's a pretty decent package. If you end up passing on it please forward me the contact info, I want to setup my 03 R/T for racing.

Idea, Power Guys; Pre oiler, so you have oil pressure before you start. Amsoil has a good one.

toolfan, that sounds like a great mod. i call b.s. on the fact that you need a cam to gain from the heads. a cam upgrade or a head upgrade do essentially the same thing but in different ways. they both let more air into the piston on the intake stroke. then that air is compressed, bottom line! the heads will increase your torque and especially your upper end power.
however .bob and sincityrt have some good points. it will raise your power band, but only as much as a good cam will. i'm not sure how much, if any bottom end you will lose. gears would be a great way to help make up for any loss of low end torque. alot of people though do a cam swap or head upgrade and don't lose low end, they gain. but this is not the case if you go too big. you can put your power band out of daily driver reach if you are too careful. i would NOT do a cam and heads. you would certainly lose low end torque then. with the stock cam and those upgraded heads, you will definitely help out the horsepower numbers.
i must admit i'm not sure it's the best $1500 spent. maybe a cam or roller rockers is better bang for the buck.

yeah its a great deal but like people see the trucks engine is tired. but there is guys out there, like my friend who has a cam in his 318 and he has 140k miles on it no rebuild. i have to replace the water pump and that would be the prefect time to replace the cam with a better one and replace the timing chain. as for the heads i'm gonna pass on those even tho its a good deal.

i think i'll look for a cam any ideas for a good one that gives you gains of 25hp+ and a power through the whole rpm range would be great. thanks!
