I'm replacing my muffler on my 98 Dakota sport. What mufflers do you guys suggest? I was thinking a Flowmaster 40 series, but I hear that they can sound a bit like a tin can. I was told to look into Vortex too, which sounds more throaty. I'm looking for the deepest rumble growl sound I can get. I do not want it to sound like a bumble bee in a tin can :) Suggestions? Thanks.

v-6 go with the magnaflow
v-8 go with flowmaster or magnaflow

The 40 series is a 2 chamber, and are loud. I got the Force II catback for my v-8 and it sounds great.

Toolfan, if you could make a sound clip, that would be great. I would appreciate it. I'm just afraid of getting that tin can sound, but at the same time, I want something that sounds better than stock.

I had a Magnaflow single in dual out installed on my QC about 3 1/2 yrs. ago and have been totally happy with it. It exits behind each rear wheel, and has an awesome v8 rumble sound. I get compliments on the exhaust all the time, yet it is mellow at highway speeds and doesn't bother me on long trips. I commute 70 miles a day for work, so I have probably put 50k on the exhaust system with no problems.
I have heard good things about Flowmasters also, so the choice is yours. Good luck, and I hope you're happy with whatever you decide to do!

There is the ORIGINAL 2 chamber 40 series which is the louder one.
Then the 40 series DELTA FLOW like many of us get that is quieter in the cab than the original and not quite as loud as the original.

If you want LOUDER go with a Glass Pack.

Don't bother spending the coin on Magna Flow, etc if you want loud. Buy the $20 Cherry Bomb glass packs as most mufflers with the baffles are similar to glass packs just over priced!!!!!!!

Flows have the UNIQUE echo sound to them that differs from everything else. They have NO padding inside them or baffles like glass packs. Just chambers the air flows around.

Go Flowmasters for unique sound with a NICE throaty sound on a V8.

If you want LOUDEST, go to glass packs.

Pass on the others. It's just spending money on a name and a shiny muffler body no one can see anyway.

I agree with GraphiteDak. While I am totally happy with my Magnaflow system, if you want something louder I would follow his advise. I personally love the mellow V8 rumble I get from my Magnaflow system and appreciate the fact that it is not overly loud. Just loud enough for people to know that you are not running stock exhaust. Again, I get compliments on the sound of my exhaust frequently.
GraphiteDak- I think you have the coolest QC I have ever seen. I like all the mods you have done, but still keep the truck pretty much stock looking. Ultimate 'sleeper'! I love it! When I ordered my QC, I almost got the graphite color, but went with silver as it hides dirt and scratches better and I am too lazy to wash it all the time! The graphite looks so nice when it is clean. I know you did your gear swap yourself, how much do you think it would cost to pay a shop to have it done? Did you have 3.55 or 3.92 before the swap and what performance increases have you noticed since? I think you posted some videos after you did the swap and I was impressed! Thanks in advance for any response, and again my compliments to you on your QC, it's awesome!

I have a Flowmaster Super 40 on my 4.7L Dak and really enjoy it, but it does reverb a lot in the cab. I also had a Flowmaster Super 40 on my 5.2L Jeep Gr. Cherokee and really enjoyed it. It has to be one of the most aggressive, throaty mufflers I've used. The DeltaFlow 40 and Super 40 do not have a tin can sound as best I can tell. Their price is also a lot more agreeable than Magnaflows.

Dynomax Ultraflows don't sound half bad on .318 engines. They have a 5.2L Durango soundclip on their website. I don't really think there is a whole lot of difference between them and a glasspack though only that Dynomax swears up and down that the fiberglass in their mufflers won't break down over time (or so I was told by a rep).

I paid $190 for my Magnaflow system (installed). I don't know what other systems are costing, but I was pretty happy with the cost of mine......I thought it would cost a lot more. Just had it done at a local muffler shop here in Southern Oregon. What have you guys paid for your systems? I don't know if I got a good deal or not. Just curious.

i did the muffler transplant myself so it was the cost of the muffler. i dont have any thing after the muffler. i just got home and have to fix a really bad exhaust leak but once i do that i will try and make a sound clip.

the best deal i have seen in my area for a muffler install is $130 and that includes the muffler. i think the $190 Spacinjason paid is a good deal. i think my only choice on the mufflers is magnaflow or flowmaster.

I dropped in just a Magnaflow muffler, after trying a drop-in glasspack for a couple of months. Too much resonance with the glasspack.

The Magnaflow is the perfect combination of desired sound and no cab resonance for me.

But as has been said before, you need to go for the sound you like best. The Magnaflow has a deeper glasspack-esque sound vs. the Flowmaster's sound which is a more metalic echo-chamber sound. Which is better, is kind of like style, it's all in the eye/ear on the beholder.

As for cost, the Magnaflow itself was $60, with a $30 weld-in fee from the shop. The cost/benefit of a cat-back wasn't worthwhile since attaching a 3in pipe after the 1 3/4 primaries into the 2.5 y-pipe/cat.

If it's a sound upgrade you want, just buy the sound modification part (the muffler).

OK. So if I go with the flowmaster, super 40, I assume I go with the 3 inch offset Model: 953047? Any suggestions where to order it? ebay has them for $75 shipped. Is that a good price? The price on flowmaster's site is $105.75. I have to do something soon because right now all of the exhaust output is just leaking out of the muffler onto the undercarriage of the truck, and I don't want it to cause decay or rust. Thanks.

Toolfan, that was awesome. Sounds incredible. Exactly what I want. Near the end though, when you recorded from a stand still and you stepped on it, what was that "raspy" sound? But thanks for the clip. It helps a lot. So it's the offset 2.5 inlet and 3" outlet? You don't remember the exact model number do you? I can't find that exact configuration on flowmaster's site. If I get it off ebay, I know I'll have a problem returning it if it's the wrong one, so I want to be sure I do it right the first time. I have the 4x4.

the muffler has a number on it but its really long and really hard to read but if you think its the model number i can try and get it for you. if you do or plan on doing a cat back system than get the flowmaster with 3in inlet and 3in outlet for better performance. the raspy sound was because i had the trans locked in 1st gear and when i let off the engine was slowly coming down in the rpms. it shouldn't be that bad of "raspy" sound if you have exhaust running out the back.

its a "off set 2.5'inlet 3' outlet"

I've got a 98 Dako regular cab, short bed, 4x4, 5.2L, 5spd man, K&N FIPK, Hypertech Power Programmer, Magnaflow hi-flow cat, and a 3" in dual 2-1/4" out Flowmaster Delta 40. The exits are dual 3" stainless Magnaflow's @ 45 degrees on the corners. When I first got duals, it sounded pretty pissed off but it still had the stock converter. It had a mild rumble inside @ 70 mph with the revs @ about 2250. It was a deep sound but not too noticeable at a distace. With the new cat there is increased resonance in the cab and a pleasantly noticeable rumble @ 70, and it sounds more pissed off. I think you would be happy with the Flowmaster if you also got a hi-flow cat.

I am looking for a dual system that has a deep sound, not sounding like a rice rocket and pipes that exit behind the rear wheels as stock. Any ideas without spending a fortune??? Thanks!
