I am in the process of modifing my intake manifold. I had a small blow out in my plenum gasket. Is a small blow out noticable? Could that be the cause of the increased detonation and oil burning? The blowout is only in one place and it didnt break the gasket - its only pushed out to where you could see half the gasket.

And... How do you keep the die grinder bits clean? After a little use I the bits plug up with the aluminum I am grinding off. AAARGH

Yes a blown belly pan gasket will lead to detonation and oil consumption. Many people end up swapping to the M1 2bbl when their gasket goes out, but you can always simply replace the gasket or try one of the billet belly pan plates from places like Hughes Performance.

93SuperDak, SinCity is 100%correct regarding the belly pan issue. With regard to the grinding bits, get a candle (any shape will do) and rub it on the areas that you'll be grinding on. Leave traces of the wax on the aluminum. I hope you're using either carbide or high speed steel grinding bits. DO NOT use stone wheels on aluminum. Nothing will keep stone wheels from galling up on aluminum. Hope this helped. Good luck!

I adjusted the air pressure to keep the die grinder from spinning so fast - so far its working and I have 1 side done. I am using a bit that is cone shaped and gold in color, I think it may be coated with titamium.

I am still not convinced that a very small leak in the belly pan can cause that many problems - Time will tell when I am able to put it all back together. I am thinking of going thru the valve train and replacing oil seals pushrods (cheap) and making sure the springs are good.

Trust us when we tell you abou the plenum gasket. Search other forums and see for yourself. We just dont want to see you go through all that work, just to replace it again. Spend the $100 for the 1/4" thick plate w/gasket and bolts that APS offers.

Absolutely nothing. That's all I use if I can. The belly pan problem isn't the gasket, it's the thin, stamped out sheet metal cover that's the problem. It doesn't have the ability to hold the gasket properly between the bolts. Even when the bolts are tightened to specs, the gasket can/will squeeze out causing problems.
