hey folks, I need a little direction with my dakota. Got in my car the other day to start it but it was dead. I jump started it but the engine dies once i let off of the gas. A friend with a dakota said he had the same problem after his battery died and his dad did something to reset the computer or something, although he was not sure. I'm kinda broke so i'd like to handle it without a mechanic if possible but i just want to know what it might be. I dont think its the alternator or the ignition. Im hoping it is just something small but i would love help from anybody with any idea what it might be. Thanks a lot, i appreciate any help you all can give me.

Buy a new battery and check your cables for corrosion (replace or repair as necessary).
If you don't have enough voltage going to your pcm it will just crap out.
you might be able to just keep it revved for a while to let the battery charge some, but chances are it won't work if you are at the point where the motor won't idle on its own

downdak, when you turn the key does it just click, click, click, click. if so check your battery cables, they gots to be on tight. as far as it dieing when you let off the gas after jump starting, keep the engine reved up for a couple of minutes, gradually easing up..This happened to me after cleaning my post on my battery. I took both cables off and just didnt get the pos. back on tight enough. if no clicking sound when you try to crank, you prob. just need a battery..

When voltage gets too low to the PCM it will forget the idle, and have to relearn. As long as your battery is still good, just keep it reved up for a bit and you'll be fine. That's all I had to do for it to relearn the idle when my battery went bad and needed to be replaced.

My 99' 318 Did the exact same thing after I left the cargo light on for two long. You probably have a damaged cell inside the battery. That's Probably why it's not able to hold a charge from a jump or from letting your alternator charge it up. Even if your other cells are fully charged its not enough to keep 12 volts going to your coil, as soon as you let off the gas the cell loses its charge, and your volts drop to 9 or 10 and thats not enough.

Or maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about.

had a similar problem - seemed like after battery went dead the choke wouldn't work and it kept dying. Cleared up after I put a new battery in

Replace the battery and relearn the idle. Have the charging system checked while you're at it.

OK, this is going to sound crazy but I had the same problem just last week. I left my interior light on overnight and the thing would not idle. It sounds like the same problem. It would run after I jumped it IF I kept my foot on the gas, but it ran very rich and rough. The problem is that when you have a drain on the system. All the electronics get drained, PCM included. Sometimes this happens and sometimes it doesn't but the PCM has to relearn how to run the truck. I just drove it about a mile two footed and it now runs fine. Holding a charge was not the issure here. I have a friend, who happens to be a master mechanic, who told me about this. He has it happen all the time on the Dodge vans he services w/360's. The drivers leave stuff on and can't get them to idle the next day. It appearently happens a lot to him. Anyway I realize this is an older post but I thought it was worth mentioning before anyone replaced a battery or alternator without at least trying this. It worked for me, and I have a 97 dak with a 318 and auto trans.

The only thing that sounds crazy about that is its a rather long summary of what I already posted to this thread...

you guys are right. it happened to me, this weekend, but after i jumped it, it ran fine, so i let it idle for about 20 minutes to charge the battery, then when i shut it off, and tried to get it to idle again, it would die,so i just kept my foot lightly on the gas pedal, for a minute or two and it cleared up.
prob solved

I have saw the problem with Hondas and alternators going dead. First it will run the battery dead, then the engine will stall. Jumping it off has no result because as soon as you take the cables off the engine will stall because there's no current to fire off of. I replaced my alternator about 2k miles ago with a high-output one at 150 amps. It benched at the parts house 175amps. pretty nice. nice when you are doing trailer lights and lots of accessories like my 1500w power inverter wired in the extended cab.
