my truck pulls the best off the line cause the trannys will not down shift if i nail it and its already in second. my truck from 60mph pulls good and makes it is easy to get around annoying drivers. i think the auto trannys really kills alot of performance on these trucks.if the trannys would find the right gear than it would really pull great. i have the 318 so the 4.7 would probably kill me in the 60mph roll on.

Under 30mph mine will drop to first and kick some tail...

Toolfan has the older 44re tranny where as us 4.7 guys have a FULLY electronic 45RFE (or 5-45RFE on 03 and newer) tranny.

To answer you though, I like having a 10-15mph roll. Really seems to slam you in the seat.

ey toolfan,

cant you shift yours with the column yourself??
like from "1" to "2" or downshift from "D" to "2"

specifically for "racing" of course haha

yeah fed i can do the shift manual and normally do if racing. i dont ever down shift the truck from D 2 cause that will eat 2nd gear. happen to my friend. took the dakota out last night to run it down the 1/4 i did three runs but only record one :( 16 flat with the friend in the truck. my friend ran his rc 5spd 8 times and the road we were testing the times on isnt that long so after the run you have to be on the brakes. he did 8 stops back to back 90mph to 0 and the truck never had brake fade. lucky kid! i wish i had the 45rfe or the 5-45rfe because the 44re doesnt no the meaning of grabbing the right gear.

I also have the 44RE and I think it's a better tranny than most people think. Mine will spin the tires for a few seconds, then grab and pull to 5K rpm, then shift to 2nd, then to 5K rpm, etc. If I punch it, it downshifts immediately without hesitation. I'm the second owner, and the previous owner could very well have adjusted the TV cable, as he did some other small mods too, (flowmaster muffler, jet chip (I know), and he removed the snorkel off the air box. I've replaced my first intake (10x2.5 KN) with a 14x2.25 paper and it no longer makes that high pitched whistle. It also has much better throttle response. I'm happy with the transmission, and the 44re may not handle the torque of the 5.9, but we have the advantage of a better first gear. 45RFE still beats us all though, but our transmission is a 45+ year old design! not bad...

the 44re is a good unit and mine for have a 153000k still shifts solid. today i got lucky twice and the trannys held first gear to 4500rpm than shifted and man it pulled great. i stomp on it at 15mph and it drop in to 1st held it again to 4500rpm and i could feel the tires tring not to break loose. the trannys feels like it is shifting hard and dropping gears when i nail it. :-|) is the 44re a 904 torqueflite unit with added O/D?

Basically, the 44RE is a 904 TF with electronic O/D, and the 46RE is the 727 w/ electronic O/D. I think there are some other minor differences because there was the A500 for the Gen II Daks.
